GeordiePride Report 16 Feb 2014 17:19

My Aunt May Robson married John Greig Balfour in Gateshead 1919.
He was born in Kirkcaldy 1898 and was a Stoker on HMS P11 stationed at Portsmouth at the time of his marriage.
They had 3 children, Catherine, Grace and Thomas Alexander. My Aunt died very young in Gateshead,1932 and John was never seen again.
I really want to know if he remarried and had other children and how long he remained in the Royal Navy and when he died.
I would be thankful for any information regarding him after my Aunt died.
Thank you,
GP

Hi Shirley - Thomas Alexander Balfour was my cousin and my mother brought him up when his mother died. I haven't followed the children through as yet.

Chris - Thanks for this information.

Andrew - I have ruled this one out as his death was given before his May's death which I have been led to believe he was still in RN after her death.

Thanks,

GP

Well Mays death cert will say wife or widow of so will verify if he was still alive at her death

The death we found for him matches his age and possible birth year . It's the only death that comes up that matches

Plus coincidently it's the same area . Really think its him !

Hi Shirley,
All I have at the moment is a copy of their marriage certificate. The death certainly matches his description but I'm sure he was still alive at the time of her death. I have contacted one of his grandchildren but she cannot help.

GP - for the sake of £3.36 it would be well worth downloading the record that Chris has linked to, it may answer your questions.

Hi Everyone who contributed to my thread.
I decided to purchase a copy of the death certificate of my Aunt May Balfour (nee Robson) and she died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis December 1932 and it stated that she was the WIDOW of John Grieg Balfour.
I had a chat with the lady at the BMD department about it and she kindly confirmed free of charge that John Grieg Balfour her husband died in January 1932. He also died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis so that ends the search.
I would like to thank you all for your help.
