Glitterbaby - I have pretty much tied up his life after 1893, right through to his death in 1942. It is his life before 1893 that I am having trouble with.

Reggie - Many thanks for the information. I will look for a baptism. Didn't know that before 1875 there was no compulsion to register a birth. One of the witnesses was his wife's sister but the other was. no doubt, the best man. have looked through the electoral rolls for the address and as you say he does not appear to have been at 11, Mowlem Street before 1893.

Chris Ho:) - Thanks for the info on the burials.

Potty - It is interesting that you advise that Mears' occupation is a publican. William was a pot man and a cellarman at one time, so there may be a connection there. Is there a list of Bethnal Green pub landlords anywhere?

rootgatherer - I have no evidence that William ever lived in Wisbech. Having said that I have no idea where he was between 1860 and 1893, so anything is possible.

Once again many thanks for everyone's responses.

I still find it amazing that he was married in January 1893 and yet I cannot trace him in the census taken on 5th April 1891, just 21 months earlier!

Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

Until 1875, no penalties for not registering births, so his probably just wasn't registered..............especially as he was illegitimate

...................look for a baptism

So where is he in 1901 and 1911 ?

My great grandfather is William Selby (b. 1860 Bedford, d. 1942 Bethnal Green). In January 1893 he married Alice Elizabeth Davis but I cannot find him on any census before that date or any birth record. His marriage certificate states that his father is unknown.

It seems strange that I can find him in 1893 but not before this date.

Does anyone have any hints as to how I might proceed. Thanks.
