BeverleyW Report 11 Feb 2014 07:40

The daughter Eliza is recorded in the non-conformist registers for Somerset.

Cuzner Eliza Father: Livnel Cuzner 1825 Baptism Somerset RG4_3260
Cuzner Eliza Mother: Hester Cuzner 1825 Baptism Somerset RG4_3260

3260:
Register of Births and Baptisms at Zion Independent Chapel of Selwood in Frome, Somerset from 1809 to 1836

This could explain the lack of a C of E baptism for Lionel/Leonard.

From Freebmd:

Deaths Mar 1864 (>99%)
Cuzner Lionel Frome 5c 471

:-S

The original register is practically illegible and the Christian name could be either Lionel or Leonard. To my eyes it looks slightly more like Leonard.

but she says that her Lionel was a Fuller ..........................

that's something to do with weaving linen, isn't it?

just googled ............

a fuller is someone who cleanses wool by "fulling" :-)

ie, cleansing of cloth (particularly wool) to eliminate oils, dirt, and other impurities, and making it thicker.

that's different from being a Collier or Coal Dealer.

but then, who knows, with our ancestors!

Another possibility is that he was born illegitimate under another surname and his mother subsequently married Mr. Cuzner.

Beverley ....... two minds think alike :-)

It is of course entirely possible that he was never baptised.

I believe, from various books that I have read, that a collier's life could be a very migratory one ............. moving from coal mine to coal mine, and living way out on the moors

Lionel obviously was lucky ................ he moved from being a Collier to a Coal Dealer.

Of course, another strange possibility is that he didn't like the name that he was given at baptism, and adopted the name Lionel :-)

Not common ................... but not unknown!

Thanks, Stuart. That is what I wondered, Sylvia, since the FreeReg coverage of Frome is very complete as regards baptisms in that time frame.

No Lionel on the Somerset OPC page either :-(

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Feb 2014 03:41

In the 1841 Census, Lionel is shown as "Collier"

I wonder if this is a case where he was NOT born in Frome, but moved to Frome at such a young age that he knew no different?

Aware of what you are asking, but BeverleyW had asked how you knew he was born in Frome, so I inputted the census with his place of birth on it.

FreeReg has a large number of baptisms for Cuzner in Frome, but not a Lionel. How do you know he was born there?

I am trying to trace the Parents and siblings of Lionel Cuzner born 1794 in Frome Somerset. He married Esther Rolfe on 15th May 1815 in Frome. Their children were Emma born 1816 Eliza born 1818 and Jeremiah born 1821. Any help with this would be much appreciated Thanks Pam
