Peter Report 9 Feb 2014 18:17

Hi there,

I have a copy of the National Burial Index in the UK, but I am currently working in mainland Europe.

I am wondering if someone could look up the burials of the testors of these wills:

Margaret Willes, Robinhoods Bay, Fylingdales. Widow. dated 10.4.1779, proved Dec 1783 (f.540)

daughter Ann wife of Henry Hinde
daughter Margaret wife of George Cockerill
grandchildren Rebecca Trattles, Martha Trattles & Isabel Trattles daughters of my late daughter Isabel Trattles decd
wit: John Mathews junr, James Appleton, Jonathan Leng junr
---

I've also had difficulty in finding a marriage or a will for Margaret Willes' husband (name unknown). Also, had difficulty in find a marriage for Isabel Willis to Mr Trattles.

Any help is much appreciated,

Best wishes,

Peter

Peter -

Can you give us some idea of when Margaret's various descendants were born, and where, please? Were they all in the Fylingdales area?

Peter

Peter Report 11 Feb 2014 16:19

Thank you ArgyllGran.

The short answer is 'no'.

BUT, I descend from Margaret Cockerill and her family was raised in Fylindales also, so I assumed there.

Sorry this doesn't really help! What do you think?

ArgyllGran Report 11 Feb 2014 17:05

I expect they would all have been in that area. People didn't generally travel too far afield in those days.

I don't have a copy of the NBI, but some (all??) of it is on FMP.
I have a 14-day free trial of FMP, but it still won't let me look at the details of any record without paying, which I'm not going to do yet. Maybe someone with a full subscription could check these for you. I've no idea if they're relevant or not. No results come up for Fylingdales burials.
Sorry, not really much help!:

From FindMyPast:

Daughter Margaret's marriage, which isn't what you're asking about:

Margaret Willis
England Marriages, 1538–1973
marriage: 26 October 1767 Fylingdales,York,England
spouse: Geo. Cockerill

???
Ann Willis

???
Rebeccah Trattles

Thank you ArgyllGran, that is very kind! I have just had a sub run out on Find My Past.

Also I do use familysearch but couldn't find anyof those Trattle references ... so thank you for that! Maybe mistranscribed.

Thank you for that! Much appreciated!

If anyone else can add more, then please do so.

This seems to complicate matters ... seems the correct 'marriage', but this makes me think the writer of the will is really quite old:

Isabel Willis
England Marriages, 1538–1973
marriage: 27 September 1754 Scalby Near Scarborough,York,England
spouse: Richard Straddles
Name Richard Straddles
Birth Date
Birthplace
Age
Spouse's Name Isabel Willis
Spouse's Birth Date
Spouse's Birthplace
Spouse's Age
Event Date 27 Sep 1754
Event Place Scalby Near Scarborough,York,England

Yes, if that's the right marriage, then Margaret must have been in her 70's or older when she died.
Does that matter - apart from making it harder to trace her own marriage?

Peter

Peter Report 12 Feb 2014 15:10

Hi ArgyllGran - no doesn't matter at all. Just not what I was expecting really! Would be nice to find a marriage for her!

And also a will for her husband - presumably, he left a will in order for her to be able to leave a will?

This was kindly sent by Gritty!

You don't say when daughter Margaret died- this is a possible. Also note, when Margaret Willes married- the name is transcribed as Wiilis.

Name: MARGARET
Last name COCKERILL
Birth year 1744
Death year 1814
Age 70
Burial year 1814
Burial day 23
Burial month 4
Place FYLINGDALES
Church description ST STEPHEN
Church denomination ANGLICAN
County Yorkshire, Yorkshire (North Riding)
Record set National Burial Index for England & Wales

No age given, but a possible for George:

Name: George
Last name Cockerill
Birth year -
Burial year 1789
Burial date 11 Jan 1789
Age at death -
Burial place Fylingdales
Father's first name(s) George
County Yorkshire (North Riding)
Archive Borthwick Institute for Archives
Record set Yorkshire, bishop's transcripts of burials

Peter

Peter Report 6 Oct 2014 18:35

Hi Gritty, yes, thank you that is all correct. Although Margaret senior died between 1779-1783 when the will was proved and I've found this burial:

Yorkshire, bishop's transcripts of burials Transcription
Print transcription View image Attach to tree
First name(s) Margaret
Last name Willas
Birth year 1684
Burial year 1783
Burial date 29 Nov 1783
Age at death 99
Burial place Fylingdales
County Yorkshire (North Riding)
Country England
Archive Borthwick Institute for Archives
Record set Yorkshire, bishop's transcripts of burials
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records

But if that is the case, that would make her 60 when she gave birth to Margaret Willes Cockerill (1744-1807) if the burial you found was correct?

Thank you!

Peter

Thank you so much Gritty - you have been a great help. If nothing else, you confirmed my suspicions that the family were not from Fylingdales itself so we shall see. How intriguing! Wow, thank you.

Best wishes,

Peter
