I am researching Henry Moore West, Born Topsham,Devon 1850. I have him in various census all living in Topsham devon married to a Mary Jane ? (He is a bricklayer/mason)

I looked for a marriage and found what looks like two.

1874 JAS 5b 172
1873 JFM 5b 136

Both marriages have Mary Jane ? possibilities -in fact one mariage has two of them! I did wonder whether that might mean that she had been married before and one version was a maiden name - and one a previous name - don't get it!
advice welcome please as I don't know what to order.

I did check and there seems to be only two Henry Moore West births -one mine in 1850 -and one his son.

I see both of those dates have a Mary Jane Lodge.

Births Dec 1853
LODGE Mary Jane St Thomas 5b 53

in early 1873 she would have been 19 yrs old

perhaps she did not have parental consent to marry and there was a 'do-over' ?

If she was born in September 1853 and married in September 1874, for example, she would have been 21 (and the marriage might have been right after her birthday, suggesting a reason for the second effort if that were so)

These are things that the certificates may hold the answers to

'cause nobody else really understands either :-)

Buy copy certs to have any hope of finding out...................

As none of us was there at the time, anything suggested would be guesswork

Well I do know that people did marry twice, out of choice, but usually in a much shorter time frame. No one seems to know the real reason why.

One I do have in my own research....

1845 James Keen Cooper marries Susannah Hawkins
then
1847 James Keen marries Susannah Hawkins

Images on Ancestry if anyone wants to look.

The 1847 parish register entry has a note in the margin that this a remarriage as the Groom had been married in 1845 in the wrong name.

As the first marriage was legal I don't really know why they bothered with the second....Perhaps they didn't feel 'legal' and wanted a nice new certificate :-D
