I was thinking the same, that North Aycliffe is the house itself.

It looks like the piece of land was sold for the railway:

Ref: D/El 12/51
Plan of land at North Aycliffe purchased by the Earl of Eldon from Jacob Coulson for the Eldon Branch Railway, n.d. [1868]
Scale: 25 inches to 1 mile [1 : 2500]
(1 plan, 44 cm. x 34 cm., waxed linen, coloured)

Ref: D/El 12/16
Requisitions on title and answers concerning William Coulson's title to lands at Great Aycliffe, 20 - 24 July 1868
(1 paper)

Ref: D/El 12/39-40
Draft declarations of George Etherington concerning the late William Coulson, farmer, and a piece of land at North Aycliffe to be purchased by the Earl of Eldon, 21 September 1868 and n.d.

and others

On the 1891 census, North Aycliffe comes under 'Whitworth' along with Finchal Cottages, Clarence Cottages, Burn House, Travellers Rest, Howden Farm and Wood farm amongst others.

I'm thinking North Aycliffe is the house.
no record of a place called that in great Aycliffe.

taken from Google
A parcel of land called North Aycliffe purchased from Jacob Coulson in 1868 and sold to Sir William Eden.
There are lots more references to the Coulson family at North Aycliffe.

This time Traveller's Rest and Burn HOUSE (not Farm) are listed before North Aycliffe.

Apologies for rambling on beyond your initial question, you probably know all this already, I just got the bit between my teeth but will stop now.

This site seems quite interesting:

http://www.aycliffehistory.org.uk/

it has burials for Margaret Coulson and Hannah Coulson and probably others as well:

Margaret Coulson Aycliffe November 22 1847 67 1780 J. D. Eade, Vicar 115

William Coulson North Aycliffe July 31 1865 85 1780 J. D. Eade, Vicar 173

Hannah Elizabeth Coulson North Aycliffe July 31 1856 41 1815 Willm Eade, Curate 142

According to this the family were at North Aycliffe in 1851 according to a trade directory, though the census actually says they were at Traveller's Rest.

http://www.aycliffehistory.org.uk/html/trades.htm

Census 1851:

Address: Travellers Rest, Great Aycliffe County: Durham

COULSON, Jacob Head M M 34 1817 Master Tanner Emp 2 Men
Sadberge, Durham<<<<<<<<<
COULSON, Hannah Wife M F 35 1816 York, Yorkshire
COULSON, Jacob Son M 4 1847 Aycliffe, Durham<<<<<<<<
COULSON, William Son M 1 1850 Aycliffe, Durham
MINIKIN, Hannah Servant U F 19 1832 House ServBarnard Castle, Durham

Traveller's Rest is preceded by 'The Tannery' on the census page.

EDIT:

Jacob senior's probable father William was still at North Aycliffe in 1851, but the farm seems to be run by a daughter in law of his.:

Address: North Aycliffe, Great AycliffeCounty: Durham

COULSON, Ann Head W F 34 1817 Farmer Emp 1 Lab Sadberge, Durham
COULSON, Margaret Daughter F 6 1845 Scholar Aycliffe, Durham
COULSON, Jane Daughter F 4 1847 Scholar Aycliffe, Durham

ATKINSON, Ann Servant U F 16 1835 General Servant Aycliffe, Durham

Looking at the actual image of the 1871, it is North Aycliffe again, recorded between something like Clarence Cottage (before) and then Traveller's Rest Cottage, and Burn Farm afterwards on the pages.

EDIT, There is also a North Aycliffe Tannery Cottage close by, listed after Burns farm. -

Hello, I would like to know the name of the house/farm where Jacob (farmer) is on the 1871 census at Great Aycliffe, parish of Darlington, Co Durham. He seems to be at North Aycliffe in 1861 and 1881. Thanks.
