Hi Susan, he was born c 1879, around the Altrincham area. His address on the back of the war postcard is: 14 Gladstone Rd Altrincham Cheshire. He died at Bucklow Cheshire in 1965. I have sent off for his wedding certificate to Bertha (Bathsheba Jane) Hawkins so then hopefully I can get a clue to his fathers name - there are so many Henry and Harry Smiths about then ……. I did think I had them but then other info didn't fit in :-( But that side of the family all lived in and around Altrincham and Broadheath. The Hawkins's set out in life in the early 1800's very poor, in Somerset, but by the time they had moved to Altrincham they were very middle class, living in a big house and running one of the first motorised haulage contraction businesses in the Manchester area. So when my husbands g'mother - the youngest daughter - gets pregnant out of wedlock ………. you can imagine!!! Harry and Bertha - as she was known - did not have children of their own but were very involved in raising my husband's father whilst his mum worked. Sadly we have never been told who the mystery father was, and as the family were comfortably off they did not need to apply for Parish Relief etc. Nothing on his birth cert to indicate who his father was either, and the old Broadheath Methodist church is long since demolished . Families, huh?!!!!

The forums on the site I've posted have lots about Rennbahn. Maybe you'll at least find some idea of what life was like there:

oh, thank you both. I did wonder if some had been destroyed, but I will also look at the links you have included. Many thanks.

70% of WW1 records were destroyed during WW2.

The surviving records can be found on Ancestry

If all you have found is his Medal Card, I'm afraid that is ALL that has survived.

My husbands Gt Uncle was taken prisoner in WW1 and sent to work down mines in Germany. I have tried to find details of war records online but all I found was a pink/buff coloured card with his name on etc citing the victory medal. Would there be other records anywhere about his service/status as a POW?? He has been dead since the 1960's and no one ever really found out the truth? His details are:
Harry Smith L/Cpl, 11th Cheshire Regt. ID no: 36204. I have these details from the back of his photo, plus what reads like -Rennbahn , Munster 2 - 1918 - but the writing is faded so spelling may be incorrect.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Eunice :-)
