I was recently informed by a cousin of mine that we had a great uncle Jim, from census records I found a John J Hughes and I believe that this is whom my cousin is referring to. Apparently he moved from London to the Derbyshire area, he was born in Tottenham/Edmonton area circa 1888. After going through some items that my grandmother had left me many years ago I have come across a medal/badge from the "Derby Private Fire Brigade Association" and inscribed on the reverse side is "LEY'S 1920 J HUGHES. If anyone can help with some history of the fire brigade I might be able to trace his family, my cousin beleved that he had a son and a daughter but that is all we know.

Hello Adrian and welcome to the Community boards.
Have you looked to see if any members on here have him in their family tree?
Click on Search above and then on Search All Members Trees and fill in your uncle's details. If you find any connections, you can contact the tree owner for further details.
I will let Adrian know that he has replies to his query. :-)

Thank you for the responses, the 1901 and the 1911 census records are the correct family, there is the gap in the 1901 census as William was not present but I have failed to find his whereabouts for the time. 1911 John was the oldest child and had moved out of the family home but still trying to locate, I have found a census of a John J married to Rose E in 1911 and now trying to research this. I have come across the news article for the Derby Private FB but this is the only information uncovered so far. I will contact the Fire Brigade Association and see what help they can offer

Hi Chris,
thank you for you information, John J of Walworth is not the correct Hughes, in the 1901 census Netherton Road Tottenham is correct with Henry (father) Elizabeth (mother) and younger brother George, also Catherines reply (should read 1911 census) is also correct but John J being the eldest brother is living elsewhere.
