Slavery in Jamaica - George Booth Barritt

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Gerry Report 27 Jan 2014 14:15

I have found a "return of slaves in the Parish of St Georges" Jamaica. It is for George Booth Barritt Esq! I believe he was an ancestor born 1/3/1794 in Kingston of a friend Jamaica. He may however, been George's father also named George Booth b 1768

I was wondering if there is anyone who has any info about slavery/plantations or George in Jamaica

Been googling the name and came up with this which may relate to your family, but nothing about their slaves apart from what can be found on ancestry:-

CARIBBEANA VOLUME V Extracts

MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN ENGLAND
RELATING TO JAMAICANS

EWELL, CO. SURREY

On a ledger-stone in the floor of the old church tower (the only remaining portion of the former church) :-

SACRED
To the Memory of
THO: HERCY BARRITT
Died Febry 3rd 1804
Aged 18 Months and 3 days
Also
LOUISA ANN BARRITT Died Febry 16th 1812 Aged 12 Years
Also
T. H. BABBITT Esqr.
Died Oct 28th 1817
Aged 79 Years.

Mr. Leonard C. Price of Essex Lodge, Ewell, writes that there is a much worn stone with "Barritt Vault" on it, in the pathway leading up to the tower from Church Street.
1796, March 24. Thomas Hercey Barritt, Esq., W., and Ann Mellas, Spinster; Lic..;-(St. George's, Hanover Square.) His will as date 17 March 1817. He came of an old Jamaican family (Archer, 29 and 33). His first wife was Eleanor, dau. of Sam. Booth of Vere, and I think Geo. Booth Barritt of Lewisham in 1807 was their son.

Looking at daughter Sarah's middle name I would think that this would be relevant to your family (somewhere along the line):-

GARBRAND HALL, EWELL.

A lofty arched gateway on the west side of the street leads to the mansion. It is in the Adams style, a large talbot standing on the top and the usual sphinxes lower down at the sides of the arch. There is a rough-looking shield with many coats of paint on it, which render the identification of the arms difficult, but they are Barritt and Garbrand quarterly. Edmondson's " Heraldry" gives grants of both, viz.:-

BARRITT: Azure on a chevron Ermine between three griffins' heads erased Or, two serpents in saltier, as part of a caduceus proper. Crest: A talbot's head per fess Argent and Ermine, collared Or, eared Sable. Granted to Thomas Hercy Barritt of Jamaica Oct. 28, 1768.

GARBRAND: Or, a battle-axe, in bend sinister, surmounted of a launce in bend dexter, and in chief a dart barwise pheoned and flighted, all proper. Granted to Joshua Garbrand of Jamaica Oct. 28,1768.

Parent's names are not given but she is noted as being Quadroon:-

Quadroon, and the associated words octoroon and quintroon are terms that, historically, were applied to define the ancestry of people of mixed-race, generally of African and Caucasian ancestry, but also, within Australia, to those of Aboriginal and Caucasian ancestry. The terms were used in law and government to provide a precise code of discrimination and the determination of rights. The use of such terminology is a characteristic of hypodescent, which is the practice within a society of assigning children of mixed union to the ethnic group which is perceived by the dominant group as being subordinate.
