Find Ancestors

I am trying to find the correct birth record for my GG Grandmother Ann Devonshire. From records I inherited it appeared that she was born in the Workhouse in Whitby North Yorkshire on 19 Dec 1857, but I cannot find any record of this. Her mother was Maria Devonshire b 8 Jun 1840 d 15 Aug 1865, no father listed.

I did order a birth certificate for an Anne Devonshire b 6 Nov 1859 but this does not match as the parents listed are different.

Is it possible than children born in the workhouse were not officially registered? and if so would there be workhouse records. I have the marriage and death certificates and she seems to have been known as Anne and Annie.

Any help in trying to solve this puzzle would be most helpful

It may well be her birth wasnt registered .there were no penalties til 1875 for non registration

Thank you for your quick responses. I think Helen may have found the correct birth listed in Free BMD. There are not many Ann Devonshire's listed for c 1857 so I intend to order this birth certificate.
