I am trying to find a way to trace my ancestor, but his birth is registered as 'born at sea'. How can I get past this stumbling block? He is of Irish birth.

Hello Patricia, welcome to the boards.

When you say his birth is "registered" as born at sea is that what is recorded as his birthplace on a census record or do you mean you have found his registration in the maritime birth index?

If you can give us the details then we can hopefully point you in the right direction.

I will let Patricia know that she has replies to her query :-)

Hi All

Thanks for the interest. My ancestor is Peter Kelly born approx 1833 on board ship, according to the 1871 census he was living in or around Salford, 49 Hanover Street, with his wife Hannah (formerly Molineux, born 1834) and children John 12 and Peter 5. He was a shoemaker and she was a waistcoat maker. He does not appear in the 1891 census, neither does his wife. His son Peter is there, married to Kate with 3 children, but not John. Any help in tracing them would be good.

1881 gives POB as Devonshire, Portsmouth - Portsmouth is in Hampshire not Devon, though.

Do you have his marriage cert for his father's name?

John from the 1871 in 1861 - think Lydia would be too old to be the mother of either of these John's although they are both shown as sons:

1861 England Census
John Kelly

Estimated Birth Year:

Relation:Son
Mother's Name:Lydia Mollineaux

If he knew his father's name, the info will be on the cert

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1858

KELLY Peter MOLINEUX Hannah Manchester Cathedral (formerly Manchester Collegiate Church) Manchester CATH/123/118

NOTE: This was a C of E ceremony

Are Manchester Cathedral PR's on Ancestry?

BTW - wherever it occurred, his birth will not be registered..........too early

Beat me to it, Reggie - can't find Manchester Cathedral records on either Ancestry of lancsopc. A Record on Ancestry gives date of marriage as 19 Dec 1958.

Possible for 1841 - father Peter is a shoemaker. Difficult to make out what is in the Born in County column for Peter jnr - probably a N: all the other born Ireland except for the youngest child- born in county

1841 England Census
Peter Kelly
Age:12
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1829
Gender:Male

Civil Parish:Manchester
Hundred:Salford

Peter Kelly 35
Sarah Kelly 35
John Kelly 15
Peter Kelly 12
Catherine Kelly 15
Mary Kelly 9
Jane Kelly 3

A tree on Ancestry has his parents as Peter Kelly and Ann O'Brien but has a different 1841 census attached - in that census Peter snr is a Weaver and Peter jnr is shown as born in Lancashire.

Ancestry does have images of Manchester Cathedral marriages but the images of 1858 are only for January!

Patricia, you really need to get the marriage cert.
