i now have a death certificate. no date of birth just 75 years old. he died in hospital so informant was an occupier! and his job description was retired school porter, which could still tie in as my mum said he was a handyman in a convent school in hammersmith. :-S so still no real answers.

Hi folks,
First of all, wow! Thank you so much for all your responses and hard work on our problem. This is all really appreciated.
I admit I like the idea of him following his father onto the buses. I shall pass all this information on to my aunt and see where she would like to go next and let you all know the outcome.
Once again, many thanks.

I agree Roy. Especially if the groom's occupation happened to be bus conductor or the soldier from 1911.
Would the death certs have the former occupation of the deceased?
An ideal miracle would be to find the informant on one of the death certs was Hilda F A Kirkham, but to spend the £6 looking for a probate grant for the same man's estate, and finding there was one, and that administration went to one of the siblings of Edwin James Lewis the tram conductor's son, Albert J, Caroline Mary, or, given Edwin and Sarah had lost 4 out of their 10 children according to the 1911, youngest daurs Winnfred Annie or Florence Annie from census 1911.

The Hammersmith marriage cert would help, it may be confirmation that 1911 census Edwin is the same Edwin James Lewis born 1893 to Edwin and Sarah
We need Simon's and his aunt's view on this to see if it rings any bells

Hilda was already married....
Born 3rd Feb 1901 according to her death record:
Births Mar 1901 Keymer Hilda Frances A Woolwich 1d 1268
Marriages Mar 1923 Keymer Hilda F A Kirkham St.Asaph 11b 413 - Kirkham Arthur J Keymer St.Asaph 11b 413
Daur Olive A (mentioned as living 64 Ravenscourt Rd in 1957) born 1926
Births Sep 1926 Kirkham Olive A Keymer Droitwich 6c 288
Hilda already living in Warbeck Road by 1934, no sign of her husband.
Name: Hilda Frances Kirkham Year: 1934 County or Borough: Hammersmith and Fulham Ward or Division/Constituency: Hammersmith Street Address: 33 Warbeck Road-
and in 1946 she was living at 64 Ravenscourt Road according to the image of this record:
Name: Hilda F Kirkham Year: 1946 County or Borough: Hammersmith and Fulham Ward or Division/Constituency: Hammersmith Street Address: 64 Iks
So Edwin James Lewis lived with Hilda pre war in whatever capacity; there is a period when they don't share the same address, then they are back to living at the same address namely 64 Ravenscourt Rd by 1953 (mistranscribed - Ravenscourt on image)

Just to confuse the issue...Edwin James Lewis aka 'Ted' was living in same abode as Hilda F A Kirkham in 1936 as I posted above.
In 1936, an Edwin James Lewis and a Minnie Ethel Lewis are living together, at 27 Lansdowne Crescent and would seem to relate to the 1924 Hammersmith marriage.
Marriages Mar 1924 Lewis Edwin J Patience Hammersmith 1a 436 Patience Minnie E Lewis Hammersmith 1a 436
Name: Edwin James Lewis Year: 1936 County or Borough: Kensington and Chelsea Ward or Division/Constituency: Kensington
This Edwin and Minnie also at the same address in 1937. and at 186 Ladbroke Grove in 1932:
Name: Edwin James Lewis Year: 1932 County or Borough: Kensington and Chelsea Ward or Division/Constituency: Kensington
I have work tomorrow, so I'll catch up with what Roy and Simon make of this later...
Are these two different Edwin J's, or did he get registered twice over, once with the wife, and once with Hilda?

Not the tram conductor father as he died in 1931:
Name: Edwin James Lewis Year: 1936 County or Borough: Hammersmith and Fulham Ward or Division/Constituency: Hammersmith Street Address: 42 Warbeck Road
With Hilda Frances Kirkham
Name: Edwin James Lewis Year: 1937 County or Borough: Hammersmith and Fulham Ward or Division/Constituency: Hammersmith Street Address: 11 Blomfield Mansion
With Hilda Frances Amy Kirkham, and others listed.
Name: Edwin James Lewis Year: 1938 County or Borough: Hammersmith and Fulham Ward or Division/Constituency: Hammersmith Street Address: 11 Stanlake Villas
Again, with Hilda Frances Amy Kirkham amongst others.
Hilda F A Kirkham seems to be a bit of a fixture in his life...

So you think there's a chance this might be along the right lines?
But how to actually prove it. :-S
EDIT, Definitely not the 1918 marriage, he has the wrong father.
SECOND EDIT: But I suppose this man is also a candidate for 'Ted'.
Name: Edwin James Lewis - gunner Royal Field Artillery Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893 Age: 25 Spouse Name: Rosina Violet Jones Spouse Age: 23 Record Type: Marriage Event Date: 30 Mar 1918 Parish: Lambeth St Andrew Borough: Lambeth Father Name: Edward George Lewis - carpet planner Spouse Father: James Jones - deceased storekeeper Register Type: Parish Register
But as you said the Hammersmith marriage looks more likely but sadly too late to be covered by the LMA marriage records.

No, Although Lewis is a common name it's not that common in the london area and their are not many london births or marriages for a Edwin James Lewis in the london area either, Their are two marriages that would fit one in Lambeth march Q 1918 and another more likely in Hammersmith march 1924 if he was a married man at the time then that could explain his absence and the bastardy orders

HI Roy, I posted the baptism as well, but obviously birth cert would have Sarah's maiden name.
Do you think I'm placing too much on the tram conductor coincidence?
Marriage of Edwiin James sr and Sarah?
Name: Edwin James Lewis<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864 Age: 22 Spouse Name: Sarah Slade<<<<<<<<<<< Spouse Age: 18 Record Type: Marriage Event Date: 10 Oct 1886 Parish: Kensington St Helen Borough: Kensington and Chelsea<<<<<<<<<<<< Father Name: Edwin James Lewis Spouse Father: David Slade Register Type: Parish Register
On the marriage cert, both Edwin James c1866 and his dad, yet ANOTHER Edwin James are plasterers as was the son of Edwin James c1866, Albert J in the probate record . Groom's address 9 Pilchester Terrace and bride's 163 Latimer Road ( Road name sounds familiar from the probate record) Bride'a father a wood dealer.
I have no idea how you would fathom if this family is right, or a total red herring. :-(

Not sure if this is the father or son in my previous post:
Name: Edwin James Lewis Probate Date: 14 Jan 1932 Death Date: 19 Dec 1903 Death Place: Middlesex, England Registry: London, England
Death date actually 19th Dec 1931 112 Latimer Rd Hammersmith. Admin to Albert John Lewis plasterer, £430 16s 8d.
EDIT:
Looks like the father:
Deaths Dec 1931 Lewis Edwin J 67 Hammersmith 1a 274
Question is, did the son become a bus conductor, following in the footsteps of his father who was a tram conductor in 1901 census????
Father still a conductor in 1911 census:
Address: 28 Stebbing St Notting Hill WCounty: London
LEWIS, Edwin James Head Married M 46 1865 Conductor Kensington London LEWIS, Sarah Wife Married 25 years F 42 1869 Ironer Hamerth London LEWIS, Caroline Mary Daughter Single F 20 1891 Ironer Hamerth London LEWIS, Florence Annie Daughter F 13 1898 School Hamerth London LEWIS, Winnfred Annie Daughter F 6 1905 School Hamerth London

Difficulty is, it's not an uncommon name, and you don't know enough about place or year of birth to accuratelyy narrow it down easily.

It is just that he is London based.
(Does anyone know if he had a Welsh accent, to try and eliminate this one or the other ones?)

Hi, sorry for delay in replying, yes that is him (we also found him at the other address). My aunt has looked at the properties and they are houses that are converted flats so we assume the others are the other residents.
