Just a note from rootsweb: Message Boards.
There is a message for the Reiner family - although it goes back to 2006 - lists below some names: It is connected through Central Europe - Germany, etc.
Here is a brief of the names selected: There are some recommendations. I am not sure if this is where you wish to go back to as you have the British connection, but this may just help.
Re: Reiner or Reiners or Reinert
Posted: 18 Aug 2006 4:11AM GMT Classification: Query Surnames: Reiner, Reiners, Reinert
in Germany you lease a grave for 20 or 25 or 30 years (it varies from place to place), there are almost never really old graves.
You better have a look at emigrant lists such as http://www.la-bw.de/auswanderer
Maria Reiner 1817 Nordamerika Breitnau Franz Reiner 1854 Nordamerika Deilingen Konrad Reiner 1851 Nordamerika Ellwangen (Jagst) Georg Reiner 1852 Nordamerika Forbach Hans Jörg Reiner 1852 Nordamerika Forbach Johannes Reiner 1855 Nordamerika Gomadingen Eduard Reiner 1869 Nordamerika Gütenbach Jakob Reiner 1958 unbekannt Karlsruhe Wilhelm Reiner 1912 unbekannt Karlsruhe Christian David Reiner 1852 Nordamerika Neuenstadt am Kocher Johann David Reiner 1852 Nordamerika Neuenstadt am Kocher Karoline Louise Reiner 1856 Nordamerika Neuenstadt am Kocher Gottfried Reiner 1862 Russland, Zentralasien, Sibirien Mundelsheim Friedrich Reiner 1862 Russland, Zentralasien, Sibirien Mundelsheim Ludwig Heinrich Reiner 1864 v. There are also some 400 Reiner/Reiners/Reinert in http://gedbas.genealogy.net/
For example Johannes Reiner geboren: 25 FEB 1800 Schwaigern gestorben: 4 APR 1800 Schwaigern Eltern (parents) Paul REINER, * 14 MAY 1761 Christina DERN, * 25 JUL 1768
Only seing one Karl Reiner, but it's worth a try.
Good luck

If the father's name had been recorded, one would expect it to have been transcribed

Charles Frederick Reiner is shown as marrying Sarah Elizabeth Wickes, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 on Ancestry, i'm sorry I cannot check whether it is the right one as I do not have a sub, but if someone will take a look it may give father's name.

Thanks for all your feedback which very helpful. I had traced him in UK first in Cheam where he taught at Cheam School and then to London and I also have his descendants. However it is his German ancestry that I am wondering how to trace.

No record of him on any UK census - or on freebmd
How did you work back to him?
And, if you know that he came from Germany, he must have told someone other than the Queen

My great great grandfather Karl Reiner came over to UK from Germany around 1835 and was appointed as a tutor to one of Queen Victioria's children. However the only person he ever told about his origins was Queen Victoria herself. Does anyone have experience of tracing ancestors in Germany and what resources are available?
