The word is grazier = farmer with livestock.
Can assure you he was a farmer and boatsman.

Know that the census is not clear but all reference in census have been made clear by old newspaper articles on him.

Thanks Beverley & Kathleen.

If you find anything, I will be back tomorrow.

I don't have access to the original..... but would a grocer have 11 acres?

The 1851 census image looks more like Grocer and Boatman to me. The first letter of the first word is definitely a "G"and not an "F" for farmer.

That bap. looks spot on Beverley.
However strange as it seems Thomas Smith was a farmer & boatman b.Ilkeston.
I have all his census. This is the one from 1851................................
1851 Census Little Hallam Ilkeston Derbys.
Thomas Smith 41 Head [Farmer & Boatsman] [11acres] Ilkeston Derbys.
Mary Ann Smith 40 Wife HouseWorker Nottingham
Richard Smith 12 Son Scholar Ilkeston Derbys.
Mary Ann Smith 10 Dau. Scholar Ilkeston Derbys.
Elizebeth Smith 9 Dau. Scholar Ilkeston Derbys.
John Smith 6 Son Scholar Little Hallam Ilkeston Derbys.
George Smith 1 Son Little Hallam Ilkeston Derbys.
Hannah Tempest 16 Serv. Hous Servant Little Eaton Derbys

The boatman refers to the canal at Little Hallam, Ilkeston.
Elizabeth Smith on this census was my great grandmother who married Benjamin Tatham.

I knew her father was Thomas but with a name like Smith had given up hope of finding mothers maiden name, someone gave me a clue to the name Bainbridge, so I sent for Elizabeth's birth cert. It arrived today and confirms this.
Birth Certificate
Birth: 2nd. February 1842 at Ilkeston
Elizabeth Lowe Smith - Girl
Father: Thomas Smith - Boatman
Mother: Mary Ann Smith formerly Bainbridge
Registered on 15th. March 1842 by M A Smith

Found this marriage on "Family Search" ...

Name: Thomas Smith
Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Bainbridge
Event Date: 30 May 1830
Event Place: Saint Nicholas,Nottingham.

I know that Thomas did not marry in Ilkeston, so think it may be the one.
Looks like it is difficult to get details of this marriage and doubt if any name of father would be shown. Was hoping that Elizabeth's middle name of Lowe would lead to a clue.

Your first find at St Mary's for Mary Ann Bainbridge looks good as St Nicholas Church is only a few hundred yards away.

Hope this will lead to an answer.

Many many thanks

Thanks Kathleen & Ann

Feel sure the Richard Smith is correct but have no idea of the Bainbridge family.

Looks like those Phillimore end 1812.

Wonder if Nottingham Archives have the records for 1830?

Usually parish records of a marriage from that date will NOT show father's names, but WILL show witnesses names.

Trying to find details of this marriage:
Name: Thomas Smith
Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Bainbridge
Event Date: 30 May 1830
Event Place: Saint Nicholas,Nottingham.

Any help please.
Will records at this date show fathers' names or just witness names?

Think the groom was from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, a boatman or farmer.

Bride would only be about 18 yrs.
