JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 02:08

I wonder where Eva was in 1916 and 1921?

She was in Brandon in 1911, immigrated 1908.

I don't have access to details of Canadian records at Ancestry, but using the search function I can't find her in either year

she was already in Edmonton when Edmund was attested in 1915

http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc002/278398a.gif

so possibly if they did have children it was in Alberta and I have found in the past that there are just no accessible records there

but finding her in the 1916 or 1921 census could give an answer .......... Edmund was attested in July but I can't find what date the census was taken, but if it was before 16 July he should be there too

can't find them here either

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1916/Pages/1916.aspx

here we are, it began on 1 June 1916

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 01:45

fortunately I don't have any Canadian research to do particularly :-)

I did look at familysearch for anything I could find about a relation of my partner who emigrated to Canada ... knowing only that she married a Mr Smith, yes, Mr Smith. I couldn't find a marriage (I don't think there was one) and it was too recent (early 1920s) to find birth records ... the only other piece of information was what his occupation might have been ...

a hopeless task? :-D

What I found at familysearch was the infant death in the early 1920s of a child of a Mr Smith with the right wife's given name and when I looked for that Mr Smith in the 1911 census (before the 'marriage' so I couldn't even hope to find them together until the 1921 census came out) ... there he was with the right occupation.

all finally confirmed by the 1921 census ... but still no marriage!

sometimes, luck is on your side :-)
... although I don't want to say that the death of a child was luck of course ...

by the way this also works in Australia which also has stricter privacy laws

sometimes although the birth of a child falls after the cutoff date, the child may have died before the later cutoff date for deaths (which is 1983 for NSW for example) and the index will show the parents' given names, so searching by surname and parents' names alone will find that information which can be useful for confirming marriages and timelines

Thank you Margee and Joonie

He deffo had a child in 1917 - Edmund Norman b 14/3/1917 in Lambeth. Perhaps he was on leave from army and spent it in London!!

Blimey Joonie those privacy laws must make life very difficult for you in your research. Yep, that's his death 11/2/1954. He had four siblings, 3 girls and Frederick Albert

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 01:05

because of strict privacy laws the only bmd record for any children in Manitoba would be if one died more than 70 years ago ... the cutoff for births is 100 years

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

... 1912 is 101 years ago now :-) but there was only one Button after 1911, 26 Dec 1912, in Winnipeg, and mother was a Smith

there are 7 Button deaths but none of them match someone born within a few years after 1912

the other possibility is to look for marriages (more than 80 years ago i.e. before 1933) but that again leaves you right on the cusp and there is no way to tell from the records on line who the parents were

Did Edmund by any chance have a brother Stanley Amos Button? died in Brandon 1920 aged 38

Births Mar 1882
Button Stanley Amos W. Ham 4a 51

... no, coincidence, they are not brothers in the 1891/1901 English censuses
