Apologies Margee. I think you are right. I had forgotten the marriage was in the name of Lily D. Mountford, so a mother called Dorothy is much more likely.

A tree on Ancestry says that Lily Dorothy Mountford was born 1888, Milton, Staffordshire, daughter of Thomas Mountford & Dorothy Smith. She married Henry Mathews.

Conversely your tree on Ancestry says that she was the daughter of Frederick and she married Arthur Mathews. There's no such marriage on FreeBMD. You really should be sure of your facts before you post them on an online tree. People copy these trees you know.

She married as Lily D. Could this be her birth? Middle name Dorothy after her mother?

I still think her parents are Thomas & Dorothy. She's with them on the 1911 census aged 23 and there's a 4 year old grandson named Arthur with them.

I repeat Lily's marriage certificate is essential.

I think the family that Reggie found in the 1901 census is likely to be the correct family. This is them in 1911:-

I would suspect that Lily's father was Thomas not Frederick.

I think Lily's marriage certificate is required to get her father's name.

Margee...I saw that census and thought the same! Lynn has an unsourced tree on Ancestry and has Lily as born 1886 ...so I think the statement "father Frederick" is an assumption.

Lynn we need you to answer questions as posed by all of us!

Have you found him in 1911?

Could this be his birth? :-

Name: MOUNTFORD, Arthur
Registration district: Stoke upon Trent
County: Staffordshire
Year of registration: 1907
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume no: 6B
Page no: M/25

and this his mother's marriage:-

Name: MOUNTFORD, Lily D
Registration district: Wolstanton
County: Staffordshire
Year of registration: 1914
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Matthews
Volume no: 6B
Page no: 213

Name: MATTHEWS, Henry
Registration district: Wolstanton
County: Staffordshire
Year of registration: 1914
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Mountford
Volume no: 6B
Page no: 213

His birth seems to have been re-registered in 1925 under the name Matthews, so it is likely that Henry Matthews was in fact his father but his birth was registered in his mother's surname because the parents were not married at the time.

Name: MATTHEWS, Arthur
Registration district: Stoke on Trent
County: Staffordshire
Year of registration: 1925
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Mountford
Volume no: 6B
Page no: 415

Buying the certificates would give you some addresses and also clarify whether this was definitely "your" Lily's marriage as the marriage certificate should confirm her father's name.

How do you know who his mother was?

Have you looked for his birth as Mountford?

When was Lily born?

Have you traced her on censuses?

Have you looked for a marriage?

Lynn Report 12 Jan 2014 12:19

Does anyone know anything about my Grandfather. Arthur Matthews. I have been trying to trace his birth father for years. His Mother was Lilly Mountford, daughter of Frederick Mountford and was born in Hanley. I know that he was brought up with the surname Matthews but do not know if that was the name of his Stepfather as I am unclear if Lilly married his father. He grew up in Failsworth but I do not know if he was born there or in Stoke. His d.o.b. is March 1907. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Lynn Allen.
