I have found the marriage for Mathew Bartlett and Joan Munding 24 May 1772 St.Giles Chedington, Dorset. |

Assuming her maiden name was Munding ( or perhaps she was a widow when marrying Matthew Bartlett) |

Sorry for delay in answering Ann and Mike, but thank you for taking an interest. I have considered the name Munden along with just about any variation of the name and spelling I can think of but cannot come up anything remotely similar. 'Manning' maybe but the marriage record clearly states Munding. |

I forgot to mention that the marriage record doesn't state whether spinster/widow etc., but have just found another record for a Samuel Munday who married 'J?' Munding in Yeovil 1751, trouble is that would make her a bit old I think. |

She might have been born with one surname and then had it changed if her mother married/re-married |

That is definitely another option Mike, thank you. Looking again at the 1751 marriage of Samuel Munday and 'J' ?Munding a note at the bottom says 'Bird als Munding', but would this particular person have been a bit old for bearing children late 1770-1780s? :-S |

There are some Chedington marriages (1756-1812) online on the Dorset OPC page, and the vicar seems to be consciencious in noting 'widow' or 'widower' by the praties' names so I think it's fair to assume that neither had been married before. |
