Have you found the family on any census? This looks like Francis's birth - earlier than you say:

Robinson Family - Heighington/Aycliffe
Thank you all for your very helpful replies - they have given me more help to investigate.

I am most interested in Elizabeth and Jane Robinson.

I have found out that my great grandmother was called Elizabeth Robinson - she married my great grandfather on my Dad's Dad's side - Thomas Trotter (1854 - 1919).
My Dad's Mother's Mother I found out was Jane Robinson. She married James Holmes, born Northallerton, 1852 - 1897.

I am really trying to find out whether my g grandfathers married 2 sisters, making my grand father/mother first cousins.

Potty

Potty Report 8 Jan 2014 12:59

Have you got the marriage certs for both marriages? They would give the father's names and occupations and help to confirm if Elizabeth and Jane were sisters.

Alison

Alison Report 8 Jan 2014 13:02

Hi Potty,

No I don't have the marriage certificates but that is obviously the next step I should take. Thank you.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 8 Jan 2014 14:43

Any chance of an answer about where you got the maiden name of Richard's wife.............

And the name Robinson is very common........so don't be too surprised if Jane and Elizabeth are unconnected

Have you found both couples on censuses? Do the ages/ birthplaces of the wives tally with what you have posted above?

Marriages Sep 1873 (>99%)

TROTTER Thomas George Stockton 10a 187

It would seem that it is possible that they were sisters, but, as advised above, the certs are the only foolproof way to get the answer.

Thank you all, especially Reggie and Rootgatherer for your help. I did have some of the census details already and the two families are correct. One in Northallerton and one in Stockton. Originally all I knew about my father's mother's family was that his grandfather had been a tailor in Northallerton - so we have come quite a long way. I knew slightly more about his father's family but not much more. The next thing to do is as suggested, obtain the birth certificates of my great grandmothers as, as was mentioned, Robinson is a common name.

Thanks again, Alison

Potty Report 12 Jan 2014 13:10

Alison, it would be better to get the marriage certs rather than birth certs, to confirm the father's name and occupation.
