thank you all again, all I can remember is visiting crayke with my parents up till I was aged 7, and the names of people I saw there, myrtle nelly john and George?b 1921 as this was nearly 60 years ago memory is vague, I am trying to see where they fit in my tree, all your help much apprecieated ed

ah there we are, you wondered whether the twins' mother was your Robert's sister (or cousin) and that's what I was looking for in the first place.

Since I could not see who Robert's parents were because he was never with them in the census, I could not find his brothers or sisters!

Both Nelly and Myrtle are in the 1911 census, Myrtle with mother Louisa in Crayke and Nelly with parents in Husthwaite and Thornton on the Hill (Easingwold district).

Myrtle died unmarried in 1965 in York.

Nelly married in 1938 in York and died (Nelly Neat) in 1991 in Leeds. She had one child in that marriage. Unfortunately it seems he died in 2004 in Monmouth.

If you are not in touch with Nelly's family you could get help here to look for them, but it is seeming that he may not have married. There is one possible marriage in Sunderland in with children.

as it stands the only way to find out the mother is the certificate.

Hilda about whom all this information is posted may be completely unrelated.

I think you inadvertently pasted the wrong Hilda birth there PricklyHolly :-)

it was probably 1907 rather than 1915 as discussed above, given the dates of events after that e.g. Rambling Rose posted the 1930 marriage


so ... we may be talking about the mother of a living person after all ............

I think I would not contact family without being certain that this really was the mother of the twins since it could be distressing if that was not the case.


... actually I have checked at Ancestry and that 1915 birth is some sort of error, there is no image to go with it and the quarter, volume and page number refer to births in Sculcoates in 1915, but they are correct for the 1907 birth. Ancestry has messed up several other entries the same way, births with 9d 429 in other years became 1915 and no correction for year can be submitted ...

I suspect that Edwin is interested in Robert Lancelot Cariss born 1886 Easingwold reg dist. The question may be whether a sister or daughter of his was the boys' mother? He seems to have had no daughter ...

unfortunately in 1891 he is with his Cariss grandmother and by 1911 he is married

and I can't find him in 1901 (I suspected 'Garviss' but that is someone else named Garvin)

ah, searching by birth details alone, he is Lancelot Cariss in 1887, and is not with family, and no other Cariss in that year was born in Crayke.

Edwin I just wanted to mention that when Reggie said 'fortunately' before that death, I believe he meant that it was fortunate that the person was dead because otherwise the discussion that had been started of his mother's marital status and the like here without his knowledge would not have been appropriate and I agree, we cannot assume that someone born in 1928 is deceased.

People on here can only make suggestions...............if you want 100% factual info about the mother's identity, you will need to get a copy of the birth cert
