Hello
i am looking for my wifes g/farther who was possibly German working at a farm near Malton in east Yorkshire during the war which seems a bit odd.
My wifes mother was called Diane Pinkney b 1942 and her sister was called Sylvia b 1946.
The g/mother was called Gladys and she was married to Charles Pinkney.

The suspect father of the 2 girls was called Henreih Weartimer and worked at i think its called West field farm he was in charge of the prisoners, also Gladys worked on this farm.

I know this is a bit scant on info but thought i would see if any one could help.

:-(

Could his name be WERTHEIMER ?

Deaths Jun 1958 -
WERTHEIMER Heinrich - 84- Leeds 2c 343

EDIT **** probably too old to be the father of the girls

Hello Barry, if your grandfather was German and working on a farm near Malton then he was quite possibly a PoW at Eden Camp.

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/history/war/wwtwo/museums/

Prisoners from that camp did work on farm in the area.

Marriages Sep 1942 -

Johnson Gladys G - Pinkney- Buckrose 9d 131
Pinkney Charles K - Johnson - Buckrose 9d 131

I can see a birth for Diana in 1944 ( not Diane in 1942) with mother's maiden name Johnson but not seeing similar for Sylvia... though there is one for Susan.

Barry, you mention the "suspect" father - do I take it they never married and contact was lost?

Seeing it's a strong possibility he was at Eden he may have been repatriated after release. Might be worth contacting Eden Camp museum and asking if they know about lists of prisoners.

Were Gladys and Charles not together by 1944 ?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 6 Jan 2014 20:09

Quite possible that Charles was away in the army given the period ....

Yes, just wondered if Charles had been killed or had left Gladys.
The girls were registered as Pinkney so assume either Charles was named on certs or there was no father's name given .

Is it family hearsay that the German man fathered both girls ?

I wondered if they split later as I came across this possible subsequent remarriage for Charles:

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Charles K Pinkney
Spouse Surname: Kilvington
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1951
Registration District: Ryedale
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding

So what about the information posted? Did Charles & Gladys stay together?

Would you follow up the suggestion about contacting Eden Camp?

Barry

Barry Report 6 Jan 2014 21:34

Good luck with following that up Barry, Eden Camp is now a sort of visitor attraction but they may have some knowledge of where to go for records. Nothing ventured ....
