Hi Reggie
The Mays were Londoners. I do not know from where the family originated or when they arrived in the city. As far as I can SEE original documents from the 1790s onwards, they were successful traders around Brooks Market in Holborn.
We think my g.g.g.grandfather possibly had a brother Richard and a sister Jane. And that their father as another William, married to a Ruth unknown.
I will put all the clues into my tree and await further developments. I have a headach now!!!!!! Given up for a while, until some more is digitalised.
Cheers Rosalind.

Dear Ann,
Thank you very much for all the information, which corroborates well with my own long drawn efforts over the last year or so. There were lots of Williams in the family. One died in 1809 at St Andews, after the birth of the last child, but no age given. The 1862 death gives no age either.
Dolby was a butcher and had freedom of the City by reason of birth. Does that mean William was a butcher also?
A John May (date unknown) was a butcher at 2 Beauchamp street Brooks Market. He took action in a court of law about his wife's inheritance , after he had retired and moved away. Is he related? Cheers. Ros.

In what sense are you 'looking' for him?

Who did he marry? When and where?

How old was he when he died?

Rosalind Report 6 Jan 2014 12:32

I am looking for william may living around brooks market in holborn above the bars during 1790 to 1809, when he died. His children were william thomas 1792, james, john, mary, dolby thomas1799, henry, elizabeth, richard 1805 and william james 1807.
I do not know where father william was born or his exact birth date, or siblings.
Dolby thomas was a butcher with the freedom of the city of london, by reasonof birth and so was his father. William senior was registered jn 1794. Please help .thanks rosalind.
