This one has me totally confused, I have a Bridget Clusker born/christened 14/01/1898 in Auchtertool, Fife, Scotland, she was born to a John Clusker and Bridget Martin.

Bridget Clusker married a William Nairn (see below) in 1920, to confuse matters further, William Nairn later married Bridget's sister Jane in 1934 (see below), on the marriage certificate for the marriage to Jane - William is shown as a widower - I do have both these marriage certificates.

My problem is that on Scotlands People I am having some difficultiy tracing the death of Bridget, can anyone advise or help me with this one?

23/11/1920 Marriage - NAIRN WILLIAM CLUSKER BRIDGET COWDENBEATH/FIFE 410/01 0159 23/11/1920

03/12/1934 Marriage - By Warrant of Sheriff Substitute of the Lothians & Peebles NAIRN WILLIAM CLUSKER JANE ST GILES EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN685/04 1297

Thanks,

Jim :-S

In case this is a possibilty.........

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007
about Bridget Nairn Name: Bridget Nairn
Birth Date: 30 Dec 1897
Date of Registration: Mar 1979
Age at Death: 81

I am thinking "Outside of the box".......born 30th Dec 1987....Christened....14th Jan 1898.

John fibbed when he said he was a widower.

A bit far fetched maybe?

You may find this an interesting read - bit of background about marriages by sherriff's warrent:

Gins & PricklyHolly not sure about any of those, what I do know is William's marriage to Jane was by Sheriffs Warrant, at that time many churches were very strict about marriage and they would not remarry a divorced person, as there was no civil marriage in Scotland until 1939, couples in this position resorted to getting married by Sheriff's Warrant, after 1939 marriage by Sheriff's Warrant ended, and were replaced by a civil ceremony in the Registrar's Office - so it may be the case that William & Bridget got divorced.

Thanks Flip, appreciated, but still have all my law books from when I studied Scots Law at college for my diploma.

Or, looking at the info about sherriff's warrents they never got divorced so he just lived with the sister and declared themselves "married"

Think we're all in the same boat - my lot had children born 10 years after the death of the alleged "father" (named on the bc's, but the vicar declined to mention him in the christenings - after all he'd buried the poor guy!).

However, I think Gins death may be worth a better look - the right birth date/forename for starters.

I will see what, if anything, I and find out about the Bridget Elliott with the birth date of 14 January 1898 that Gins came up with as I don't want to have to purchase that death certificate until I have ruled everything else out.

Looking at the marriage certificate for William Nairn to Bridget's sister Jane - it took place at 34 Chamber Street in Edinburgh which I think at that time was a Registrars Office, the witnesses were my aunt Elizabeth Anne Clusker and her then husband George Scott.
