Hello All
Totally new to New Zealand research.
I have found a Alice Mary Smith in 1878 dau of John & Rebecca Smith.
Rebecca's maiden name would be Hanmer if they are the correct couple, is there any way of getting further info before I order the birth certificate.
Thank you for any advise.
John

Hello

Info was from the New Zealand records site (BMD).
John and Rebecca married in 1865 at Brewood Staffordshire England.
They had Thomas 1867, knockin Salop, William 1869 Penkridge Staffs & George 1874 Worfield Salop. After which they all vanish.
Best Wishes John

You could always look through the NZ newspapers which are free online

. I have found quite a lot of info including Births, Marriages and Deaths. The newspapers were very parochial and printed all sorts of small news items which our UK newspapers would not have bothered to print.

I hope this post is helpful to you.

I didn't find anything obvious on Papers Pat but here's the link if John wants to give it a go http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

I also checked the New Zealand immigration records on FamilySearch but with a surname like Smith it's not easy.

To know for sure if the Rebecca who was Alice's mother is 'yours', you would probably need to spend the $ and get the birth certifcate, unfortunately :-( This will give you her maiden name and birthplace.

Hello John

Don't know if this is of any help but found this marriage in 1913 reg no 1031

Alice Frances Mary Hamer Smith to Alfred Henry Smith

wondered if the "Hamer" was any connection as you mention Rebeccas maiden name was "Hanmer."

Unfortunately you would have to order the cert to get the parent's names.
