According to Durham Records on line a Jospeh Thirkell died 1895 Death Reg Hartlepool.

Can anyone help me find when Joseph Thirkell married?
He was born in 1811 in Durham. On the 1851 census he is married to jane(maiden name not known)Her date of birth is 1821.
There are children born from 1836-1852
Looking back at the 1841 census jane is not there but an Ellen Thirkell also born 1811 is. It does not state that joseph is married or head.
My query is, is Ellen a twin sister of Joseph?
Was he perhaps married to Ellen although it doesnt say?
I know marriage records are not available pre 1837 but was wondering does anyone have access to parish records for the Durham area.
I am doing this research for a friend and have hit a brick wall.
If anyone can offer some advice or find info that i cant, i would be very grateful.
