Hi Newdawn, just about to send that cutting to you.

Just a word of caution about the ages on the 1841 - adult ages rounded down so Elizabeth could have been 34, plenty old enough to have an eldest child of 16!

Hello again Marie Celeste
Thank you once again for your replies this what I have found out with the help of your replies.Nicholas Swan Millen is the son of Peter Millen and Margaret Swan ,Elizabeth may have been her middle name .Margaret Swan was born 1811 Bedlington Northumberland her parents are John Swan and Mary Davison who were married 1803 at Woodhorn Northumberland, John is listed as a nailer?. Looking at 1841 census I reasoned that Peter Millen may have been married twice because his childrens ages are close to his wifes and this proved to be the case, his first wife was Jane Mackay of Northumerland Peter Millen was made a Master Mariner 1851 at Berwick after 39 years at sea this allowed him to be called Captain
I have not found his parents yet.I would very much like to be sent the clipping about
obituary 1939 of Sarah Annie Millen if you do not mind.

Many thanks once again.

I notice on your other thread that there are seafaring Millens.

This is the father Peter from the 1841 above:

Merchant Navy Seamen 1835-1941

Last name: Millen
First names: Peter
Age: 45
Year of birth: 1800
Place of birth: Berwick Upon Tweed
County/country of birth: Northumberland

Series: BT115
Date range: 1845-1854
Piece number: 8

Very little info, last recorded voyage seems to have been 1846.

Can't get this record to come up on FMP, this is from Ancestry:

1841 England Census about Nicol Mallin

Name: Nicol Mallin
Age: 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Gender: Male
Where born: Northumberland, England
Civil Parish: Berwick Upon Tweed
Hundred: Berwick upon Tweed
County/Island: Northumberland
Country: England

Street Address: Wool Market
Registration District: Berwick upon Tweed
Sub-registration District: Berwick upon Tweed

Piece: 844
Book: 2
Folio: 34
Page Number: 14

Household Members:
Name Age
Peter Mallin 41 - Mariner
Elizabeth Mallin 30
John Mallin 16
Ann Mallin 14
Peter Mallin 11
Nicol Mallin 4

(All born in county)

Name is much more like Millen on original image.

Given that adult ages are rounded down (odd how Peter snr has exact age?) then the mother Elizabeth fits with the 1871 census.

ADDED: The John Millen who is on the 1881 & 1891 cenus on your other thread (married to Agnes) is highly likely the John aged 16 on here and hence the brother of Nicholas.

There's an obituary in a Kent newspaper of May 1939:

The funeral took place Marden on Friday Mrs. Sarah Annie Millen, widow of Mr. Nicholas Swan Millen, Newcastle-on-Tyne, who died early the previous day at the age of 60. Mrs. Millen came from Newcastle last May to reside with her brother Mr Arthur Scott. She had been a widow for 13 years.

The obit is actually much longer as it names then mourners.

I can send you clipping by pm if you're interested.

The odd thing is that if she'd been widowed for 13 years by 1939 then that means there should be a Nicholas Swan Millen dying around 1926 and I can't see one.

EDIT: The papers have got it wrong! She was married to N S Millen born 1875 per the 1911 census and he died 1913.

But the birth certificate would give you the mother's maiden name so you could find the correct marriage ....... (unless he was illegitimate but at least you'd know).

If his mother was born Belford (as per that 1871) and Nicholas born Berwick then it's unlikely (but not altogether impossible) that his parent's marriage took place in Tynemouth.

Given that Nicholas was born Berwick, his parents marriage could even come under Scottish records.

Hello Marie Celeste
Thank you for your reply regarding the above query since receiving it I have found Nicholas Swan Millen on the 1871 census for Gateshead. He is living at 49 Monk Street with his wife Harriet nee Ringrose and his mother Elizabeth a widow aged 62.
The age of his mother must be wrong because I have looked for marriages etc and what I found is a marriage between Robert Millen and Elizabeth Davidson 1822 Tynemouth and she would have been only 12-13-14 years old. On the1871 census mothers birthplace given is Belford Northumberland.
Many thanks once again for your reply.

Just to say thanks to everyone for the replies you sent me regarding the above query.I have done some more research looking for a possible connection and came across some Nicholas Swans and related families living in Cornhill Berwickshire around 1780s same area.Nicholas Swan Millen born 1837 Berwick could be I
illegitimate and mother taking first names of father as that happened sometimes.

I have been researching the Millen and related families from Newcastle and Berwick on Tweed areas and with a lot of help from yourselves i have tied up a lot of loose ends regarding the families. I would appreciate it very much with help in finding out how the Swan and Millen families are connected. I have a Nicholas Swan Millen born about 1837 at Berwick he died 1876 Gateshead .A Nicholas Swan Millen born 1876 Newcastle on Tyne he died 1913 at Newcastle but it is the connection between the two families that I cannot find at all anywhere.

Many thanks
