In 1839 a Jean Moir married in Premnay - is this her?
You say you're researching Jean, Ian - what info do you want about her? Is it just the birth of James you want to know about?

20/06/1839 MOIR JEAN ALEXANDER CRUIKSHANK/ F PREMNAY /ABERDEEN 234/00 0030 0126

How do you know James was Jean's son?
I don't see his birth/baptism on ScotlandsPeople, neither in Premnay nor Kennethmont, neither as Moir (or variant) nor as Fordyce (or variant), 1835-41 - at least not with mother Jean Moir (or variant).

Assuming it's the same person, living with Jean's parents, in 1841 his surname is Moir, and in 1851 and later censuses it's Fordyce:

Have you tried Aberdeen & North East Scotland FHS?
http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/
It's not a helpful website, but you could contact them.

There's also a discussion on the subject here (in 2006):
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ABERDEEN/2006-06/1151048181:
That seems to indicate that, at least in 2006, ANESFHS had unpublished MI records for Premnay. Maybe they have other info too.

On the other hand, if the records have indeed been lost, then I'm afraid you'll just have to accept it, frustrating though it is.

Who told you they were 'lost'?

If it was the Records Office, the assumption must be that they do not exist.

Ian Report 28 Dec 2013 10:46

We have hit a brick wall in our research.
This being due to the fact that the Premnay Kirk SEssion Records seem to have been lost....i.e. Premnay Aberdeenshire.
We were researching a Jean Moir b. 09/03/1815 Premnay who had a child out of wedlock 1838....James Moir Fordyce.
Information regarding this would have been recorded in the Premnay Parish Records.
Anyone come across them in their searches.?
Best Wishes to all....
Ian.
