Looking for information on Owen Nolan born England 1861/1862. I am trying to connect him to a marriage certificate I have with the name Owen Nolan on it. The family probably came from Ireland and returned to Dublin before 1901 as I have found him on the 1901 census and am hoping I have the right person. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Maeve, it's not an uncommon name so have you any clues as to where in England?
Could you give us some further info about the marriage certificate in question?

IF he's sthe same person, in 1881 he's a Wine merchant's cellarman, and in 1901 he's a solicitor's clerk. No reason why he can't have changed his occupation.
But as MC said, it's not an uncommon name - and there's also this one in Newcastle 1901 (so obviously not the same as the Dublin one), who is a Something Hewer:

There's only one Owen Nolan birth on FreeBMD, anywhere in England/Wales 1858-1865:
Births Mar 1864 (>99%) NOLAN Owen Gateshead 10a 632
The 1901 Dublin Owen was apparently born in England - but the 1901 Newcastle one was too. They can't both be correct.

First, thanks to Cynthia for the helpful information and to everyone else for the really quick replies. Thanks again. The marriage certificate I have is my grandfather and grandmother, Michael Kenna and Bridget Nolan who were married on 2 October 1912 in St Laurence O'Toole church in Dublin. Bridget's father's name is given as Owen, his profession as far as I can make out is working with the fire brigade but that may have been a a volunteer, but I am sure he was deceased by this time.
I was connecting it to the Nolan in the 1901 census in Henrietta Street as Bridget had a sister Teresa with that age gap. Owen's wife being named Ellen is another kind of tenous connection as that was my mother's name (Bridget being her mother).
I could not find any trace of Owen and Ellen in the 1912 census but I did find on the Glasnevin website:
Death-Owen Nolan 1903 - age 41 - born 1862
Death- Ellen Nolan 1902 - age 38 - born 1864
Death - Elizabeth Nolan 1904 - age 3 - Born 1901.
I think the marriage on the civil records is them as well.
The baptism of Maria (one of the sponsors Teresa Farrell). I have been looking through the Irish Church records and the Dingles and Farrells appear to be related by marriage.
Once again thanks to all for the replies and the effort put in to the information. It is most kind of everyone. :-)
Thanks again Maeve

ArgyllGran's post of a potential marr for Owen is a bit presumptive. The FreeBMD hit actually reads:
Marriages Dec 1898 (>99%) DUNN Margaret Isabella Newcastle upon Tyne 10b 216 Forrest Sarah Newcastle T 10b 216 NOLAN Owen Newcastle T. 10b 216 Walpole Robert Fraser Newcastle T. 10b 216
So there's nothing there to say Owen didn't wed Margt Dunn. However, it's in Newcastle, pre-1901 so we can also check the local index: http://www2.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf/MarriageSearch
Unfortunately, although the postal application form says "Entry No.", it is in fact a page #, so there's 4 names appearing, and the local index, in itself, doesn't resolve anything: 1898 FORREST Sarah 1898 LITTLE William 1898 NOLAN Owen 1898 JACKSON Hannah Marriage venue - Church unknown Register No./Entry No. RO168/71
However, comparing the two sets of names, we see that the GRO page is misaligned with the local page, and the local page has one couple from GRO p216 and one couple from GRO p215:
Marriages Dec 1898 (>99%) Forster Mary Isabella Newcastle T 10b 215 Jackson Hannah Newcastle T. 10b 215 LITTLE William Newcastle T. 10b 215 MCDONALD John Newcastle T 10b 215
so taking the two indexes together, ArgyllGran's presumption was justified.
[The RO prefix to the "Register No." reference indicates it's the Registery Office register, but this register was also used for non-conformist marrs, as (pre-1898) non-conformists (excl jews & quakers) weren't authorized to keep official regos, and the registrar had to attend with his official rego for the couple to sign, and their marr would be mixed in with all the rego office marrs. Authorization to keep official regos wasn't instantaneous - there was paper-work involved, plus the church had to provide a secure storage for the rego - my wife's grandparents wed in a Wesleyan Church in 1902 with the registrar attending - this church was only authorized in 1903. RC's weren't allowed to be authorized until (I think) the 1980s. Although the official marr rego for these non-conformist marrs was in the possession of the registrar, there was nothing to stop the church from keeping it's own records of the event, as we see from safc's post: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJW3-YP2 An FS catalog search of the film # shows the church as: Catholic Church. St. Anthony's Chapel (Liverpool, Lancashire)]
