As always, I don't know how you find this information but I'm very grateful. It definitely looks as though Bodega it is.
Thanks, and hope you all had a very merry Christmas and all the best for the new year.

Skimming through other articles suggests that the Bodega Wine Co was formed in 1868 (it may have been Canadian) and was a big concern with branches in several cities in England. It appears to have opened in Liverpool in 1882.

The Liverpool Echo carried a job advert in the Tuesday 17 November 1914 edition:

"YOUTH - smart, for tables. Bodega Wine Co., Dale Street"

(There were several similar adverts over the space of a few years)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/localhistory/journey/scouse/city/dalest.shtml

Dale Street remained for much of its life a narrow and crowded thoroughfare, little wider than today’s Cable Street. However, by the 19th century, something had to be done and at great expense, Dale Street was widened several times. It was also the principal location for the large packhorse and coaching inns which provided lodgings and board for travellers and changes of horse for the coaches. . These included names long gone such as the Saracen’s Head, the Golden Lion, the Golden Fleece, the Woolpack - all taken down during the commerical expansion of the 19th century.

Can't find any mention of a Bodega on Dale Street.

Thanks Sylvia. I guess there were/are a lot of wine bars, etc., in Liverpool and Dale St. is definitely still there.

dega may refer to:
A winery
A wine cellar
A wine bar
A warehouse
A convenience store, especially those specializing in Hispanic groceries

I googled both these as I also read it as Dale Street . There was a street with that name at that time..It is still there now.

My son has just done some fancy photo editing and we think the second part is Dale St. The first word that we thought looked like Bodsea could possibly be Bodega - does this mean anything to anyone.

Thanks

Thanks all. I thought his occupation looked like assistant manager but one in 1911 census is definitely him. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Thanks MarieCeleste. On closer inspection it does look like Bodsea but can't make anything out of the second word.

Sorry, Yvonne - it's too faint. I can't even make out his occupation which might have helped - Something Manager.

EDIT: Oh, well done, MC!

The first part looks like Bodsea ...

He's an assistant manager - do you have any ideas as to what line of business he would have been in?

If anyone has better eyesight than me, and an Ancestry sub, could you please look at Robert Speirs' recruitment form for the army in 1914. Question No. 6 asks who is your employer and it's that that I can't read. His army no. is 2809 to make it easier to find.

Thanks.
