I seem to have exhausted my searches for the marriages of the Simpson and Carson families who lived in Spinfield House, Marlow, Bucks in the 1800's. Simpsons were there in 1841 and 1851, then the Carson's were there in 1861 and 1871, with son James (b1844 Jamaica) S (Simpson?) Carson's family (a military man) living there until the mid 1880's, when the Hay Murray's took possession. Both original owners were born in Ireland and seemed to have had properties in Jamaica, with James Simpson b1786 marrying possibly Mary Ann Crosbie b1791 (widow?) who kept a blind daughter (Ann 40) with her at Spinfield in the 1851 census. I cannot find the marriages of the Simpson's or the Carson's. Presumably both marrying overseas, either Jamaica or the US! Without these details I cannot make a connection between the two families, as the James Carson b1844 is quoted as "Simpson Carson". Can anyone help please? Terence Meads.

Hello Terence, could you be a bit more specific about the details of the Carsons and Simpsons in question?
Obviously you have information on them but which Carsons were in the property in 1861 & 1871 and which Simpsons in 1841 & 1851?
Just so we can have a clear picture of who we're looking for.

Thanks very much "MarieCeleste" and "BatMansDaughter" for your prompt replies. I presumed earlier that A W Stewart 1792 was James Simpson's sister, with daughters Josephine 1829 and Roberta 1833. I did not know about Louisa M Stewart 1855, presumably a grand daughter? Did Mary Ann 1791, marry William Crosbie and have 3 or 4 children (blind Ann1811first?) before being widowed and marrying James Simpson? There still seems to be a connection back to the Simpson family, as found in the 1881 census, which I could not find earlier. As it seems to be the trend in the 1800's, James 1844 has "Simpson" later in his name, but may have married a "Perkins"! It seems confusing to me that there is little marriage detail concerning the brides maiden names in these families.
I have information that a Major Simpson Carson, owned Spinfield before the Hay Murray family bought it just before 1887. It seems he inherited the house after father James Carson 1786, (who bought Spinfield in 1862), died. I see that Sarah M Carson is now a widow in the 1881 census.
Thanks again for your help. Is it possible to search further to find marriages and brides maiden names.
Terence (South Australia).

Terence - there are numerous mentions of Spinfield House in the newspaper archives.
Here's one example:
Publication:Berkshire Chronicle Publication date:Saturday 13 March 1858
In the Deaths column
March 10, at Spinfield House, Great Marlow, Mary Ann widow of James Simpson, Esq."
and
Publication:Bucks Herald Publication date:Saturday 05 February 1859
Extract "Heirs at Law or next of Kin of ANN CROSBIE, formerly of the Parish of Kingston, in the Island of Jamaica, afterwards of Spinfield House, near Great Marlow, in the County of Bucks, and now residing at Ryton Grove, near Shrewsbury, in the County of Salop,"
Basically it was a notice under the Lunacy Regulation Act of 1853 stating she was of unsound mind and asking for anyone with a claim to her estate to come forward.
There are also mentions of luxurious refurbishments to the house, visitors from America, etc etc Also mention of J Carson in respect of abolition of slavery.

Thanks "MarieCeleste". I have had some information about the owners of the original Spinfield House from a member of the Marlow Society dating from 1832 to 1937/8 where the then owner Henry Rupert Hood-Barr (who bought it in 1928) was selling the contents prior to demolition when a fire occurred at that time, destroying the building. The current building was built on the foundations soon after. My research on this building started when I found that my paternal grandmother's older sister, Elizabeth Harriet Simmonds 1882, did "service" there as shown in the 1901 census, when the Hay Murray's owned the building. Apparently the Bucks Free Press has no record of the fire!!! So I really appreciate your information and would be interested if you could find more please? One thing I did not mention about Major Simpson Carson was that in the 1881 census there is a James Simpson Carson born Jamaica 1844, "Capt Bucks Militia" (Royal Navy at Sea and in ports abroad). GS Film number 1342354. RG11, Piece/Folio 5634/40, Page 14. The Carsons owned Spinfield in the 1861, 71 and 81 census', and I have him in boarding school in Blenheim House in St Giles, Reading in the 1851 census. I am still mystified as to where the connection with "Simpson" is in his name where "BatmansDaughter" mentions his mother's name as "Perkins". Perhaps it come from a previous generation? After a visit there in July this year I heard from the locals about the fire, but memories of the date later proved to be wrong. Apparently the large garage is the only remaining part of the original building. Perhaps we could exchange more information if you wish?
Terence.

It seems I may have solved the puzzle of Simpson, Carson, Stewart etc. They were generally connected by businesses rather than family, although there is a Robert Simpson listed in the family of James Law Stewart. As I suspected they all had businesses using slaves in Jamaica. With the abolition of slavery in Britain and it's Territories in 1833, these owners were generously compensated by the British government. Apparently James Carson, was a merchant in Kingston Jamaica, partner in Porteous and Taylor, terminated 1817. Later Simpson and Taylor, terminated 1833. James Law Stewart 1787-1869 married Anne Wilhelmina Brisset. James Simpson 1786-1851married Mary Ann Crosbie (nee Stewart) buying Spinfield House, Marlow in 1832.
I hope this is useful for others?
Terence.
