I am helping a friend who cannot find a marriage for James Thomas Viney to Sarah Harriet Wise in the Southampton area, possibly South Stoneham district where their daughter Mary Mabel Viney was born in 1881 (2c 77 Jun qtr. 1881).

Any help appreciated, I've not managed to find anything yet.

perhaps they simply didn't marry......or the woman had been married before, and therefore married in a name other then her maiden name

On the 1901 census he is aged 52 born Southampton and she is 54 born Bently.
The ages are a bit iffy as he died 1922 age given as 75 implying born 1847, she died 1921, age given as 79 implying born 1842.
There is a James Thomas Viney born Jun qtr. 1850 in S Stoneham which looks to be a very good match.
There is a Sarah Harriet Wise born Jun qtr. 1841 in Stockbridge district which would match except that Bently is not listed as being in Stockbridge district.

As there were no penalties until 1875 for not registering births, the odds are that this man's wasn't

And could you answer the question about his/her source for Sarah's maiden name?

The children's baptisms on FamilySearch give the father's name as JAMES Thomas Viney, not Joseph.

Finding a birth record that *might* fit could be an incorrect assumption given that there were no penalties for not registering births.

That seems to be the family.
It seems that they named their daughter, born 1878, with the same names as her mother.

The death referred to appears also to be JAMES not Joseph:

You still haven't said how your friend knows Sarah's maiden name.............

Presumably an assumption from the 1891 census where mother-in-law Sarah Wise is living with Thomas and Sarah.

Tracing that Sarah back through the census, it looks like Sarah that was with Thomas may have been unsure of her year of birth?
