Numerous newspaper reports of the murder from 1944 in the archives all give his age as 40. Wife named as Irene Caroline Seagrave Manton.

I don't know how many Bertie Manton's were in Luton but thought worth mentioning this find in case it's him.

Article text:"A lad named Bertie Manton of 34 Dumfries Street, did not appear when his name was called at the Borough Sessions on Saturday. He was charged with doing wilful damage to a window , to the amount of 2s. on August 25th, and a warrant was issued. His mother was in Court"

It goes on to state his mother brought the lad into court later. He claimed he'd been throwing stones at a bird. Fined 5s.

(No parents named. Dumfries Street is about 1 mile from Park Street which is the address on the 1911).

Is this the James Letting you're talking about? But this happened in 1822!!!

Birth year was suggested to me so it was all I had to go on really.
I think the answer to my question probably lies within County records at Bedford and the bastardy case against James Letting.
