Hi Peter,

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/

The above is pay to view or subscription.

This one is for Manchester Library - you need to join first but it is free and then they send you a card and library number which you can then use online:

http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/200062/libraries/110/online_reference_library/8

Also, the gazette website (free):

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/

Best of luck,

There are quite a few for each of those names but they may not be the person(s) you are after.

I would need to know when and where they were expected to be?

I think you could probably search the site and bring up the results with a little info without being a member but would have to pay to see the full article?

That would at least give you some idea of how the site works and what you might find on there.

Let me have more info if you want me to look for anything for you.

PS are there many examples of for the names Ambrose Burnside(s), Hannibal Swales and Isaac Pattison?

I only ask as they seem like unusual names. Just a question in case you have time? I do use the GALE newspaper database so wouldn't need any look-ups there!

Well done Peter!

I found an asticle in the Leeds Intelligencer which stated that Edward Barrett was found guilty of manslaughter at York Assizes on Sat. 20th July but no sentence was mentioned.

I found a further mention in the same newspaper dated 30th July that says

"Edward Barrett, guilty of manslaughter, was burnt in the hand, and ordered to be inprisoned in the Castle of York for one year, and then discharged."

Looks like the Judge was in a good mood on that day, although 3 men found guilty of coining a shilling and having coining tools in their possession were found guilty of high treason and sentenced to execution ??

Thank you - found this today! Was Barret executed? How would I find that out?

Leeds Mercury - 2 July 1782

Last Wednesday evening, about 8 o’clock, a murder was committed in this town, the circumstances of which are related as follows – One Ambrose Burnside, of Blackwell near Darlington, who travels the country with pots, having been at the Pottery near this town, sent his wife and children before him, whilst he remained in Leeds to get some liquor; which done, he set forwards after them, but, when he got nearly out of the town, on the road to Harewood, he met one Edward Barret, whom he retorted with “How goes it, Old Friend” and offered to makes hands with him. This Barret refused; upon which Ambrose, with a small stick, give him a light stoke on the shoulder. At this, Barret, who seemed much enraged, stepped a few paces back, set down a basket he had on his arm, and then advancing with a drawing knife, plunged it into Ambrose’s belly, so as to reach the back bone. Ambrose walked a few yards, and then fell; but was immediately taken up and carried to the infirmary, where his wound was declared mortal, and he died the following evening – Barret, as soon as he had done the horrid deed, made off, but was soon apprehended, and lodged in the prison the same night; on Friday the Coroner’s Jury brought in their verdict Wilful Murder by the said Edward Barret, and on Saturday night. Barret is about 40 years of age, maker by trade, but for the last twelve months has gone about the country showing guinea pigs. He served eight years in the West Riding Milita, and seven months in the regulars.

Hi there,

My ancestor Ambrose Burnside was born in Auckland, County Durham in 1726 and was living in Darlington in from at least 1750-1773.

There is a burial for an Ambrose Burnside of 'Darlington' buried in Leeds aged 60 on 29 June 1782, and his death is recorded as: 'Killed by a stab with a knife.'

Obviously I am eager to know more!

This is a time I know about in records to records at that time. Any ideas how to find more about this?

Peter
