In the parish regs on FMP there is a marriage of Thomas Hockey to Sarah Symonds on 30 Aug 1798, in Luppitt, Devon.

Son-in-Law was commonly used for a stepson until quite late in the 19th century

Similarly, Daughter-in-Law for a step-daughter

This indicates that Thomas Hockey had married a woman with at least one child.

I have a copy of a will dated 1830 for a THOMAS HOCKEY from Membury Devon and there is a piece that states: I leave one pound to my son-in- Law WILLIAM SYMONS as a token of my regard.
THOMAS only had one daughter and she was married to someone else.
Would a son-in-Law in 1830 be as we know it today ?
Thank you for any help.
Regards,
Syd
