[NU are the magic letters for 4,6 and NZ for 4,5] So one could pad the 1km reference out to the nearest metre NU0121 --> NU0100021000 and then convert to the old OS style 401000,621000 although one can see from the inset map 401700,621900 is a better One can search for these coords at: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ for a modern map and http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html
A look up in Lewis gets: ELLINGTON, a township, in the parish of Woodhorn, union of Morpeth, E. division of Morpeth ward, N. division of the county of Northumberland, 7 miles (N. E. by E.) from Morpeth; containing 286 inhabitants. Etc. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445
Look again at: NU0121: Church of St Michael and All Angels, Ilderton NU1019 : Church of St Maurice, Eglingham
One can tell from the change in easting and northing that Eglingham is 9 km E and 2km S of Ilderton.

I am researching the Hindhaugh family and have come to a full stop, I have a Robert Hindhaugh, born 1768, Ellingham, Northumberland, Married 24th Feb 1793 in Ilderton, Northumberland, to a Mary Dixon. b,1772 Ilderton, Northumberland. I am unable to find a connection to my tree as I am unable to find his parents. I have tried free BMD etc and can find nothing except his marriage and family of the marriage. Can any of you good people out there please help?
