Missing names on BMD records

Wow! Thanks everybody... you've been very busy on my behalf.

I think that we have now cracked Elizabeth Anne's husband and that I'm sure he was John Freak. I cross-checked the record for Ralph Phillipson's wife Elizabeth on the 1891 Census and it shows her born in Willington in 1853 and they married in 1873...

And that 1901 Census reference for William and Alice living at Esh is certainly correct.

It looks as though there's more work to do to find Alice.

Again, my thanks to you all for your help

To find 'missing' names on freebmd, simply look through the list which comes up when you input the year/qtr/district in the 'search' boxes

Don't input the page/volume.........that will give you only what you already have, and the reason for a 'missing' name is almost always mistranscription of the page number............

If a local index exists, they often resolve problems like this - see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
In particular:
http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

[Here, I also check the postal application form]

Surname Forename(s) Year District
BEE Elizabeth A 1865 Durham Western
FREAK John 1865 Durham Western
Register No. - Entry No. - District
C31A/1 - 492 - Durham Western (1865)
[I think church C31A was St John’s Chapel Stanhope]

Surname Forename(s) Year District
BROWN William 1895 Durham Northern
HORNSBY Annie 1895 Durham Northern
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DNCH1 - 98 - Durham Northern (1895)
[I think church CH is St John's Dipton, abt 6km N of Lanchester]

I usually find that FMPs transcriptions are quite reliable:

Civil Registration event: Marriage

Name: BEE, Elizabeth Ann
Registration district: Weardale
County: Durham
Year of registration: 1865
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912
Volume no: 10A
Page no: 391

MarriageFinder: Elizabeth Ann Bee married one of the following people:

FREAK, John
PHILIPSON, Ralph
HODGSON, Elizabeth

They've managed to get the 4 correct parties.

Margee,

The wife's name was Alice - not Annie...

At 1911 Census William was married, aged 60, a Coal miner, living with wife (Alice) & daughter at 11 West Terrace, Esh Colliery, Durham. Record shows him married to Alice for 16 years, having had 2 children, 1 still living.

I couldn't find a 1901 record for him - but at 1891 my record says:
At 1891 Census was married, aged 39, a Coal miner, living with wife (Mary) & widowed father-in-law at 11 West Terrace, Esh Colliery, Durham.

Note that it's the same address - different wife! His first wife (Mary Bee) had died c 1892.

Thanks Margee. That's useful - but I'm not sure what you have found helps me tie down my individuals! I'll try to have another look at it tomorrow.

Use the surname of the missing spouse .if it's after 1911,in the top surname and the area and year . Its quite often one part of the GRO record is mistranscribed. I usually find its a difference in the page nos so the records don't cross match

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Nov 2013 20:35

Look at the original to see if the volume or page number has been mistranscribed.

Simon Report 23 Nov 2013 20:25

I've come to a grinding halt twice this afternoon when trying to find marriages on BMD. In one case two females were named but only one male, and in the other instance there were three males and only two females!

Is it possible to 'find' the missing people in any way (other than, presumably, buying the relevant certificate on the off chance that it's the person I need)?

I tried searching using the volume number and page number but that didn't seem to get me what I needed.

Any suggestions would be welcome,

Thanks,
Simon
