Sometimes in the probate record it states it..if you want to post the details of the ones you are looking to get, I'll have a look.

No, only the £6.00.
(Not sure)but I think that if you don't tick both boxes and the deceased person didn't leave a will they won't send you the letters of Administration details if you haven't ticked the 2nd box.

Hi Sally,
I have ordered a few wills in the past and didn't know what to put on the PA1S form where it states Probate Details( if known): Grant type (think that this may be probate though) so I just left it blank.

It's best to tick both of the boxesbelow:

Copy of Will(if any)

Copy of grant of probate or letters of administration (if any)

Perhaps they have changed their way of working - very helpful if they have.

They certainly never used to notify - maybe they have seen the error of their ways....lol!

Reggie

I was notified that there was no Will. Maybe I was lucky, it took about 2/3 weeks for it to come back, via snail mail

Hi Jude, Gins and Reggie,

A big thanks for taking the time to reply.

Will sort out tomorrow.

Thanks
Sally :-)

Whether or not a Will is found, the charge is £6.00, non-refundable, and you won'tbe notified if they can't find one

Hi Sally

The cost for a search and a copy of a Will (If found) is £6.00

If the people you are enquiring about died before 1966 (incl) their probate record should be on Ancestry

Any dates after 1966 you will need the probate service, which ArgyllGran has posted

Good luck

:-)

You need to download form PA1S

http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/family-history

Fill in the form and send it with a cheque for £6 per search/will to

The Postal Searches and Copies Department
Leeds District Probate Registry
York House
York Place
Leeds LS1 2BA
Tel: +44 (113) 389 6133
Fax: +44 (113) 247 1893

They don't do card payments or email applications...the first one I sent for took months...but I have sent for several since and they've come back quite quick

Lots of info here:

http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

In particular this bit, which is different from what Mike posted above:

"What if I cannot get to the Royal Courts of Justice or a Registry?

For a search to be made you should complete form PA1S (Application for a General Search) and enclose the fee. If you know the details of when the grant issued these can be entered on the form. Send the completed form to:

Postal Searches and Copies Department
Leeds District Probate Registry
York House
York Place
Leeds
LS1 2BA

Please provide the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, stating what you require and enclosing the appropriate fee which is £6 for the first copy and £1 for every additional copy ."

›› HM Courts Service: Guide to obtaining copies of probate records

It is possible to request a copy of a will by writing to The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, York Probate Sub-Registry, 1st Floor, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 9RG, giving the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, stating what you require and enclosing the £5 fee. Requests are not accepted by phone

Assuming that probate has been granted, you can visit First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1 6NP (tel: 020 7947 6939) which is the principal probate registry for England and Wales, and make a search in person.

Alternatively, you can visit the probate registry that covers your district.
There are also 18 sub-registries and you'll find a full list of both with addresses and opening times on the HM Courts Service website.

UPDATE --------- Sat 23rd Nov

Yippee, I have printed off application forms, very excited !!! I know i'm sad, but closer to getting my first will.

On the PA1S form under Probate details, what does the "Grant type" mean? and the bit further down that says do you want a copy of the "Grant of Probate" is it normal to get that? and what does it include please?

I haven't done an application before, so once this one goes off I will be fine. !!!!!!

Many thanks
Sally

Hi,
I wonder if someone could help, can you spell out in simple words how I order a will.
I am being really thick I think
I have looked on Jonesey - The Will
I have looked and got the details of where the people died, year, area etc, but I am confused !!!!!
The three wills I want to find are Llandaff 1950 - Hereford 1927 and Birmingham 1941 - I have the other info of course.
Any help would be great
I have ordered lots of certs, but with the wills :-S :-S :-S

Thanks
Sally :-D
