Hi im trying to find a marriage between George McNaught and Eliza Allan .I have them on their son Samuel McNaught,s marriage certificate but cant find when or
where the married any advice welcome thankyou Helen

Can you give an idea of location and roughly when this would have taken place?

Hi Helen - we have to have a rough idea of date - century even - and is this UK or elsewhere? If you have that marriage cert you must have more info than you are telling

As a starting point, when and where was Samuel married?

As English and Welsh MC don't give the mother's name, it sounds as if the marriage didn't occur in those countries.

Have you found Samuel on any census? Where & when was he born as that may lead to his parent's marriage

There is nothing for a previous husband - this option just appears on the entries, if blank there isn't one!
Her father has same surname so she is presumably a spinster. And it does state she is single.

yes Jan it gives the marriage of George McNaught and Eliza Allen with both herfathers name and george,s but no mother

An Ancestry tree has this family. They have George McNaught's parents as:

John mcnaught
1822 – Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Jean Balmour
1800 – Glasgow

Marriage 1836 23 Sep
Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

I'm thinking they YOB for John is probably wrong!

They have Eliza's father as Samuel, but no mother for her.

so far as I know, only Scottish marriage records show the names of both father and mother.

English and Welsh records show only the fathers' names .......... and ti looks from that record posted by Jan, that Irish records may not show the mother's name.
