Hi everyone!

My late grandmother was adopted.
I have her birth certificate and adoption certificate but I'm still struggling to trace an exact birth family.

MARJORIE SCHOLEFIELD
B.Oct 1939, Halifax
Adopted.Oct1942, Stockport

Mother on birth certificate is named MARJORIE SCHOLEFIELD also. Scholefield is also listed under maiden name too.

Can anybody help please? Or lead me to where I can find more information.

Thanks
Rebecca

Have you looked on freebmd ?

There's no saying that mother Marjorie gave birth in her home town, but in case she did ... there is this one ...

Births Sep 1910
SCHOLEFIELD Marjorie - Halifax 9a 374

Baby born with same surname as mother's maiden name usually means the mother was unmarried

Yeh I have seen this one before. I am unsure if this is her due to the age she would have been when my grandmother was born. My grandmother was under the impression from her adopted family that her birth mother was quite young.

Im at a loss. I have a place of employment and home address at time of birth for the birth mother. is there anyway I can check records for these?

Just a thought that while it might be more likely that a younger woman would have her child adopted, this adoption went through in the middle of the war so a single mum of any age would have found it very difficult if she did not have support.

Rebecca, does the place of employment give any indication of the age she might have been in order to have the job she was doing?

Oh yeh! Very true!

It says she was a jewellery packer, so i don't know?

There is this birth in Holbeck, I think that's fairly near Halifax? and would be more the age you thought perhaps

how would I determine which one would be her?

I have found several possibilities. both mentioned are on my list. I just get stuck proving which one is the family. :\

Thanks for your help

There is a tree on Mundia.com which has the Marjorie born 1910 Halifax on it, (as Marjory) there are a number of siblings listed, you could try contacting the tree owner and ask discreetly if they have any further info on Marjorie? where she lived worked etc might give you enough info to eliminate her as a possible?

Rebecca I have sent you a message, with some details of the possible parents of the Marjorie born 1921, it may help with elimination if you can trace her forward.

Rebecca, you can I think eliminate the Marjorie born 1921, a tree on Mundia showing the parents that I PMd you has her dying in 1928. looks likely as this death in Bramley district includes Holbeck.

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 8 Nov 2013 20:25

Perhaps! Thanks.

You know census' and electoral rolls arent available for 100 years after, is there a way i can get hold of information about where they lived ect before the 100 years?

Rambling

Rambling Report 8 Nov 2013 20:30

Electoral rolls are available, as per other thread you would either have to go to Halifax or try phoning the library...might help to know who Marjorie was living with at that address?

Rambling Report 8 Nov 2013 20:32

The Scholefield /Hopper marriage they also had a son Ronald born Stockport who married in 1941 Bakewell....so that does move them from Stockport over to the right area.
