Can I phone Essex Record Office in Chelmsford? Thought you would have to go in person. I will give it a try. Thanks.

Thank you so much everyone. I am astonished at the information you have given me. I will be looking at it all to see if it all fits. Still many questions to answer.
So very thrilled thank you again.

Gwen, Have you tried phoning Essex Record Office in Chelmsford?

He just might have been baptised in Leytonstone. Maybe.

On the London Marriages there's a John Bentley born 1877 with a father Thomas getting married in 1900. This could be the John from the workhouse.

There's a school admission for Brid. Bentley in 1890 at St. Aloysius' School - father Thomas living a 30, Stibbington Street, Camden

I wonder if we have the right family here as John named his father as John Albert Bentley on his marriage certificate.

Could well be! Something is wrong somewhere. Could be names, dates or anything. That's why I think the best way would be to find his admission to the workhouse etc. Thanks for your help. Gwen

Hmmmm....

I wonder if he was born out of Wedlock and just put the name on his marriage cert to cover it up.

Can anyone please help me, this is driving me to distraction.

John Albert Bentley b 1877 Leytonstone.

Cannot find him on the 1881 or 1891 census. The first time I can find him is in school admissions as follows: John Bentley, birth 1877,
King Street School, Borough of Camden. Admission date 20 August 1888.
Notes: Previously Camden Street School. Renamed King Street School 1919. Became richard Cobden SChool 1937.
Under Parent/Guardian it says: Board of Guardians.
Found him on the 1901 and 1911 census- he married Mary Ann Myson in 1899 in St Pancras

It seems that he was in the workhouse/industrial school. His friend Albert Stephens was also in care and in the 1891 census was on a Training Ship Torewell in Purfleet and it seems that they were good friends as he was witness to Albert's marriage.
Can anyone tell me where to look next please. Someone has been to LMA on my behalf and found nothing but maybe he was not looking in the right place. For health reasons I cannot get to London. Without finding a parent I cannot go any further back. I would be so grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction. Many thanks

Gwen
