Tracing an illegitimate birth in Paris

Julia

Julia Report 29 Oct 2013 22:20

My great-great aunt's husband Harold Dilke - his middle name is sometimes given as Henadge, possibly a misspelling of Heneage - was born in Paris in 1881, four years after the death of his mother's husband. The date may have been February 13th, although my only source for this is a non-official document. His mother, Rosamond Fetherston Dilke (nee Dixie), was a socially prominent woman, the daughter of a baronet. Does anyone know where his birth may have been recorded?

Thanks!

Julia

There was a huge scandal in the newspapers in 1878 when Rosamond Emily Dilkes sued Major George Fetherston Dilkes (her late husband's brother) for libel and slander.

He had alleged that Rosamond had a long standing intimate relationship with Lord Aylesford. Lord Aylesford and she both denied this.

Major Dilkes was not found guilty but it reads like a deal was done.

Thanks, all! I'm fairly well-informed about Harold Dilke's later life, it's just the registration of his birth I'd like to clear up. AFAIK his marriage certificate is the only document which gives his place of birth as Paris.

Harold and Amelia visited my family in Bradford in the 1940s. Harold claimed that his father was an earl, and the scandal involving his mother and the Earl of Aylesford certainly makes this story credible - as does his middle name, as the earl's full name was Joseph Heneage Finch.

Oddly enough, Aylesford's estranged wife also gave birth to an illegitimate son in Paris in 1881 - the father was the Marquess of Blandford, Winston Churchill's uncle!

GlitterBaby, Rosamond's maiden name was Dixie - her father was Sir Alexander Dixie of Market Bosworth, Leicestershire. Again, I've researched this side of the family quite thoroughly.

The Commune of Paris has a website where you can request a search for BMD. Unfortunately the searches start from 1903.

Ancestry has a data base Paris, France & Vicinity Births, 1700-1899 – having searched it, I can’t find a Dilke. The data base is primarily transcriptions of parish records.

Familysearch.org has links to RC baptisms, but there was a ‘technical difficulty’. The France, Protestant Church Records, 1612-1906 link does work, but with the description including “French commission for Informatics and Liberties (CNIL) does not allow publication of sensitive data below 150 years.” A baptism could be considered sensitive, but not a death.
