The Genealogist whom i hired over a two year period 2004/2006 sent paper work of which i will type a portion of.

Application was made by this person's husband in November 1868- he was residing in Old Slate Row, Kippochhill, was 45years of age, born Possil Road, Roman Catholic wife Jane White 31, born Springbank. Married in 1857 in Glasgow by Father Ferguson.

Both dead.

i do not have a marriage certificate.
I can see that this is going to be very hard work to sort out but this is the only info that i have regarding Susan Harley and Robert.

I am guessing Patricia got Susan's name from son Robert's marriage cert.

Patricia, if you have that marriage cert, can you post all the info, please, eg, addresses, occupations and whether the father's are shown as deceased?


Edit: Looking at Robert jnr's first childs DOB, the info probably came from his death cert.

I have some free searches available on RootsIreland so I had a look.
There are 5 marriages for a Robert McLaughlin (and spelling variants) between 1817 and 1827 but none to a Susan or Susanna.
No marriages at all for McLachlan.

I'm afraid I can't see a birth for a Susan Harley either. How did you get to her surname?

You can't get birth certs for that era...........and any so-called genealogist should know that.

Civil registration in England/Wales started in 1837 - in Scotland in 1855, and in various years in Ireland, depending on category

Have you noticed that Robert and Susan - and at least one child - were born in IRELAND?

Have you looked at the familysearch site yet?

Ohhhhh so much info, thank you everyone though i am still no nearer to finding Robert McLachlan's parents that's Robert Mclachlan abt 1823.

I did have a Genealogist do some searching a few years ago and she could not find Robert's birth certificate.

But, i am so thrilled with the replys i have received to date, i feel as if things are moving in the right direction!
