Lorri Report 22 Oct 2013 11:01

1881 census has William Joseph Chapman ( B.1861 Silverstone Northamptonshire) living with his parents George and Hannah Chapman and his brother George. I can not find him in shipping records, he obtained mining and land rights in Coramba New South Wales in 1889 to 1896. He married in Adelaide in 1893 then took his new bride back to Coramba and had his first child there. I would be very grateful if some one would please do a search in Shipping Passengers for me. He must have left some time after 1881 as he was not in the 1891 England census. He may have came out with a brother Charles Chapman who was a couple of years older. Regards Lorri. :-)

Thank you Alviegal for your reply, Charles I believe was William J Chapman's half brother, George Chapman was a widower when he married Hannah Summers in 1856. I have not been able to find any details yet of George's (b.abt 1808) first marriage. I think Charles may have been born early 1850's.
I also found the census 1871 & 1881 and they are my Chapman's.
Regards Lorri.

Reggie thank you for your reply, I was afraid that may have been the case. Incoming passenger list to Australia a very vague.

This is the closest I'm seeing though I know the year of birth is out. It's not definite proof though.

Lorri, how do you know about Charles please? Were there other siblings? Perhaps we could try to find out the name of George's first wife.

Lorri

Lorri Report 23 Oct 2013 01:25

William Joseph Chapman named his first son after his brother Charles William Chapman. Williams first child was born in Coramba N.S.W. Australia in 1893.
Family stories tell of the William and Charles (Charles being older by a few years) coming to South Australia then travelling to NSW gold mines. William died in 1931 at the age of 70, his death certificate notes he had been in the Commonwealth of Australia for 50yr., making it approx. 1881 he left England. He met his wife in Adelaide, I have no idear what happened to Charles. I sent for one certificate for a Charles born 1855 Northamptonshire but came back wrong one as the father was a John Chapman (mother Lucy E. Mawby).
George & Hannah (William Joseph parents) I have received there marriage certificate (1856) it states Georges father as Joseph Chapman.
George was abt. 48 when he married Hannah.

This could be a possibility, coming up on ancestry but there is no image:

William Chapman
Age: 24
Birth Year: abt 1864
Place of Origin: Northampton, England
Ship Name: Duke of Argyll
Port of Departure: London, England
Port of Arrival: Moreton Bay
Arrival Date: 11 Aug 1888

The one who arrived 2/3/1883 was a joiner according to the image - but I think your William was an ag. labourer in 1881 so unlikely?

Lorri

Lorri Report 28 Dec 2013 00:09

Thank you Flip, that one I believe is him, he was always down as a labourer, and the rest come together, thank you
Cheers,
Lorri.
