Hi,

I have searched for a birth record for my 2x great grandmother's brother, found in the 1851 census, recorded as Charles Cooper, born in 1840,41, in Hull, Yorkshire. However, I have not been able to find a birth record for a Charles Cooper. On his marriage certificate, he is known as Matthew Charles Cooper and in the censuses following his marriage, he is known either as Matthew Cooper, or Charles Cooper, with details about birth place, age, occupation and wife's and child's names all matching, so it is definitely the same person. Charles's ( or Matthew's ) widowed mother and younger sister moved to Bradford sometime between 1851 and 1861, so it is assumed that he did too. Neither Matthew Charles Cooper, or Charles Cooper has been found anywhere in the birth records and he must have been born in Hull, as his parents were married there and his sister, Ann, was born there, too, in 1844. All census records show his birthplace as Hull.
Does anyone have any ideas, please, about where else to look, since the Yorkshire bmd and Ancestry.com have no record of his birth in 1840/41, in Hull.
Thanks,
Gillian.

In 1840 there was no penalty for NOT registering a birth so many births were just never registered at all

Perhaps his birth wasn't registered. Was his siter's birth registered please?

There was no penalty for non registration until about 1875.

Thank you to all who replied to my query about Charles/ Matthew Charles Cooper. Also, sorry for the delay in replying.
Porkiepie ( Roy): I didn't realise that there was no compulsion to register a birth at that time ( 1840), so that could be a reason why no birth record has yet been found.
Also, I had not seen the male birth registered at Sculcoates in June quarter, 1840, so that is worth following up.
rootgatherer: Was unaware that compulsory birth registration didn't come into effect until around 1875 and sister, Ann's birth was registered ( born in 1844) and I have her birth certificate.
The census record you supplied for 1851 is the correct one for Charles, where his mother is a widow. I believe the 1841 record you supplied is the right one, though I have wondered, since, from memory, the father, William's occupation was listed as a policeman, when he was a seaman recorded on Ann's birth certificate in 1844.

The marriage records supplied by you , are both correct, though I hadn't , before, seen the one relating to Matthew Charles 's 2nd marriage.
Safc: The christening record for a Matthew Charles Cooper, with parents, William and Elizabeth, seemed like the right record, until I realised the year was 1848 and Charles/ Matthew Charles , was born in 1840. However, it could still be the right one, if he was christened at the age of 8!! By the way, in which site did you find that record , please?

AnnCardiff: I realise that I should have included names of Charles's sister and parents in my post. However, though the records you supplied were incorrect, due to not knowing the parents' and sister's names, I do appreciate the fact that you took time to search for me..

Thank you , Cynthia for reminding me that I had replies to my query and for informing me how to navigate the site! All help received from everyone mentioned above has been appreciated and thanks to you all.

Gillian. :-)
