To reduce the possibilities slightly - Leonard Mayhew was not born in Scotland.

A very big thank you to everyone that has looked into my grandparents. Yes, their first son was Alexander Leonard Mayhew, born on 18.1.1916 at home at 5E Theatre Street, Battersea. Florence's surname on the birth certificate is Mayhew. I have tried to look for them at this address on the electoral registers but there is no sign of either of them.
I hadn't even given it a thought that Leonard may not have been born in the UK so will start looking further afield.
Unfortunately, all three sons and their spouses are now deceased and I was never aware of any great aunts or uncles. My cousins are older than me and they were not told of any either. It really is a mystery as I cant imagine they were only children.
Thank you so much again and if anyone does uncover any more information I would love to hear about it.
Sue

Might not be him but will post just in case:
British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 about Leonard Mayhew Name: Leonard Mayhew Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882 Age at enlistment: 33 Residence: 8 Sycamore Estate Oulton Broad, Lowestoft Document Year: 1915 Regimental Number: 72945 Regiment Name: Labour Corps Number of images: 17
Off to read through the 17 pages .......
Have now read the records and it's the same man as in the census records above. This man returned to wife Ethel at the same address as the 1911 when he was demobbed in 1919. In the interim they'd had a couple of children, the last being born in 1916.
I guess that eliminates those census.

Was Alexander the oldest son, it's just he was born in 1916 in the middle of WW1 - Leonard may not have been born or lived in England/Wales prior to the war - have you checked Ireland/Scotland - he may have just been posted here and settled.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me find anything on my paternal grandparents.
Leonard died on 16.12.36 and is buried in Wandsworth cemetery. I have a memorial card saying he died at the age of 56 years old. My paternal grandmother was Florence Maud Hall who died on 27.9.50, aged 67 years. They had 3 sons - Alexander, Victor and Reginald. It appears that they didn't get married but my grandmother changed her name to Mayhew around 1918 (London census records). I am able to find them in the London voting registers for most years from this date but nothing at all for Leonard before. Without a marriage certificate I am unable to find their parents with any certainty. There were quite a few Florence Hall's born at this time and I believe, looking from birth and census records that she may have been born in Carlton, Suffolk but is there any way of knowing with certainty before I start researching the wrong family? All 3 of their sons have died and I or my cousins have any records or knowledge at all of Leonard, Florence or any siblings, if there were any.
If anyone can give me any help at all I would be extremely grateful.
Thank you.
Sue Honey
