According to someone's tree on Ancestry, Robert Welsh born 1909 shown in 1911 census is actually the son of Thomas Nixon Welsh

Jeffrey Welsh 52
Sarah Ellen Welsh 49
Thos Nixon Welsh 31 - married
Stephen Welsh 16
Robert Welsh 2

I think that tree's correct Mike. Looking at the ages of Jeffrey and Sarah Ellen it's not impossible but I'd say they were a little old to be young Robert's parents.

Not only that, on the original image it says that Sarah Ellen has had 3 children, 2 still alive. The two still living must surely be Thomas Nixon and Stephen?

I think Stanley needs to be 100% sure of the birth year of the Robert Welsh that he's trying to trace. There is a 1907 birth posted above and Durham would be the usual registration district to cover Willington.

BUT - depending on where his parents were living they could quite conceivably have registered his birth in the neighbouring registration district so this birth is also a possible:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Robert Welsh
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1909
Registration District: Chester le Street
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 615

EDIT: Not the case, see census below.

This makes a bit more sense:

WELSH, Thomas N Head Married M 31 1880 Coal Miner Hewer Durham Willington
WELSH, Hannah Wife Married 7 years F 29 1882 Durham Stockley
WELSH, Jeffrey Son M 6 1905 Durham Willington
WELSH, Robert Son M 0 (7 MONTHS) 1911 Durham Willington

RG number: RG14 Piece: 29939
Reference: RG14PN29939 RG78PN1732 RD551 SD1 ED17 SN97
Registration District: Durham
Sub District: Brandon
Enumeration District: 17
Parish: Willington

Address: 33 Russell Place Willington Durham County: Durham

Hannah has had 2 children, both alive.

I think when the father Jeffrey Welsh has completed the 1911 census return he has entered the names of all his children, whether or not they were at home. I strongly suspect that the Robert aged 2 is the name of the deceased child and that was his age when he died.

pm from Stanley:
"I am going to get the death certificate at durham soon as I can I think the childs parents are Thomas Nixon welsh and mother is Hannah welsh maidenname challenger married 1903."

My reply:
" I'm pretty sure that the deceased child is NOT that of Thomas Nixon Welsh and Hannah. If you look at the 1911 census I posted for them it says Hannah had borne 2 children, both still alive - the census return should have stated if any children had died, I checked the actual image of the return and no children were listed as having died.

If you also look at the notes I put on the bottom of that 1911 census I have suggested that the deceased child belonged to Jeffrey and Sarah Ellen Welsh."
.....................................................................................................................

I still maintain that Jeffrey Welsh recorded the names of all of their children whether alive or dead and whether living at home or not - he certainly recorded Thomas Nixon Welsh on the census return when, in fact, Thomas N Welsh was just a few doors away and had completed his own census return for his household. Jeffrey and Sarah may have had a child called Robert who died aged 2 at any time during their 32 year marriage. It may be the 1910 death or it may be another.

Ignore the birth year of 1909 for the Robert listed on Jeffrey and Sarah Ellen's census, that is only there because it has been calculated from a given age of 2.

Bear in mind that there is a big gap between the birth years of Thomas Nixon and Stephen - makes me think there may have been a child in between.
