Help with Scottish ancestor please

Member Since: January 2005 Posts: 239 Send Message	Hi All Help please, I can't find any info about Charles Probert born circa 1774 in Midlothian, Scotland. I have his marriage to Mary Mowbray, sometimes spelt Moubray, and the birth of their children. It's as though he didn't exist before his marriage. Thank you Welshbird x

There are many Proberts in the area on the earlier cenus records. 	Why do you think he was born in Midlothian? Do you have any documents which state that?

	Welshbird,. Look at Family search for the name Probert Unless Probert is a version of another name, earliest recorded SCOTTISH births and marriages for Probert are ALL in Cramond. You say you have a lot on info on the family of Mary Mowbray. Do you know what the connection is here ?...... All in Cramond Marriage: 1789: WILLIAM PROBERT and ISOBEL MOWBRAY Marriage:1790: ISOBEL PROBERT and ROBERT BOAG Marriage 1796: CHARLES PROBERT and MARY MOWBRAY Marriage 1797: ELIZABETH PROBERT and ALEXANDER WHYTE There is one more couple , but I can find no marriage for them WILLIAM PROBERT and SARAH DIXON They had children baptised in Cramond between 1778 and 1783. ( More than likely that there was only one William Probert .Widowed from Sarah Dixon and remarried to Isobel Mowbray? It makes peferct sense) Subsequent marriages found within 20yrs, anywhere in Scotland, do seem to be the offspring of the above couples! The exercise is to collect all the names of all children born to above couples and compare them .

	Not sure if this is relevant but Cramond is on the River Almond near Edinburgh. In the 18th century there were water powered mills there which worked Iron - usually scrap into tools etc. I know there was one called Peggy's Mill, the ruins are still there. The businesses were eventually absorbed by the Carron Iron Works at Grangemouth in the 19th century.
