Potty meant to say there that in Scotland if the birth is prior to 1912 you can view and download the image.

Also worth noting that in Scotland you ca visit the Scotlandspeople in person and view more recent registrations. Although you can't print off the image, you can make notes.

All the above assumes you are looking for births in England or Wales. If it is in Scotland and if the birth was after 1912, you can view and download the image of the original register entry from scotlandspeople site. It is pay-to-view using credits - £7 for 30; costs one credit to view a list of results and 5 to view an image.

There are several local register offices in my area which allow you to confirm facts before you buy a certificate
One may ask, of a certain entry , if for instances for a birth, if the parents names are xxxx and xxxx and ask if the father's occupation is xxxx but if not correct they are not allowed to tell you what the entry in question actually states

Register Offices are unlikely to allow free viewing of records - would anyone buy certs if they could see the info without paying?

If your time-scale is pre-1911, use censuses to narrow down your possible records.

If it is is post-1911, when MMN is on the index, you should be able to get a better idea........................by looking at siblings, and finding the marriage(s) of the parents

As Gins says.............post some details - let's see what can be found for you

Hi

You might be lucky and find a helpful registrar but generally the answer to your question is no.

Some counties have baptisms online. You could post the details of the birth(s) you are looking for and cross your fingers

:-)

Does anyone know if a birth certificate can be viewed at the registration office prior to purchase. I have in mind a number of possible birth certs but the volumes are too great to purchase everyone to eliminate them.
