Is she named as Sarah Ann in the School entry form (she married just as Sarah)? If she is, this could be her baptism:

Name:Sarah Ann Grace
Baptism Date:10 Dec 1797
Parish:St Mary, Rotherhithe
County:Surrey
Borough:Southwark
Parent(s):John Grace,
Ann Grace
Record Type:Baptism
Register Type:Parish Register

The marriage of William Howard has now been established as taken part on 5th August 1823 at St Edmunds, Lombard St, London with Sarah Ann Grace 1797-1868. Sarah was from another Thames 'barge working' family of Rotherhithe.
This information came from the entry of their son, Briton Michael Howard b.1835 on his entry to the Greenwich Hospital School in 1847, whereby the parents marriage date was recorded. This verified his parentage.

Hello again Glitter
Looking at the marriage entry again, it is Phelps as there is no dot above the 'i' so assume it is an 'e'. The other letter 'i' is dotted.

Thanks Glitter but the second entry for the same marriage is spelt Phelps.

Have you found Sarah on any later census to show her place of birth

I have just discovered a Sarah Phelps (b.1799) married my great grandfather William Howard b.1795 (a Thames waterman then Master mariner) from a Thames boating family of Rotherhithe.

Sarah on 1841 census is noted as Harbour Mistress, so she has strong river connections. Their son Briton Michael Howard (b.1835) was also a Lighterman, also of Rotherhithe

Has anyone any information on Phelps or Howard trees that may help?

Thanks for any assistance - Pete Howard
