Could someone please advise me how to find the parents of John Hicks as I don't know where to start looking.
He was born in cornwall 1792
Married Ann Hammersley 1812
1841 census St Saviour Southwark with Hannah & Catherine (daughters) and william corbett Hicks son.
1851 census St Saviour Southwark with Daughter Hannah
died 1860

On his marriage certificate one witness is Thomas Hicks

thanks for any guidance.

There are at least 8 John Hicks born in Cornwall between 1790 and 1795.
I think that it's a bit unlikely that his father would be over 50 when he was born, though not impossible of course.
I can't see the marriage, could you give the full details please?

Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837
Name: John Hicks
Spouse: Ann Hammersley
Marriage Date: 1812
Parish: St. Martin In The Fields

Do you have another record?

EDIT: Have found the parish record on FMP, does say in presence of Thos Hicks and Eliz Hammersley.

I suppose Thos could be father or brother .....

As I only have the info from the marriage certificate I can't say wether Thos is his Father or Brother. Not sure where I go from here....

Thanks Chris

Before the inception of the GRO in July 1837, there were no such things as certificates............only Parish Register entries.

Have you tried the IGI?

https://familysearch.org/

What was his declared age in 1851?

And his stated birthplace....................

For INFO

HICKS, John Head Widower M 60 1791 Warehouseman
Cornwall VIEW
HICKS, Hannah Daughter Unmarried F 29 1822 At Home

Birthplace doesn't help much...............

BUT......if his age is correct, he was born before 31st March 1791
