World War 2 records are still with the MOD and not online. You can find out how to order them from here:-

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

You have to prove the relationship to the soldier and the records cost £30 but will take many months to receive.

This looks like his birth:-

Name: THOMPSON, Matthew
Registration district: Durham
County: Durham
Year of registration: 1914
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Dinning
Volume no: 10A
Page no: 881

My wife’s uncle Matthew Thompson (born Shincliffe in County Durham 1914) was one of the troops evacuated from Dunkirk and I am trying to find out more information about him. I think he served in the Durham Light Infantry but apart from Dunkirk all I know about his service was he was based near Rothsay in Scotland for some time during the war
